UCL Recap: Shorthanded Lyon stumble in Prague
A shorthanded Olympique Lyonnais were handed a 2-1 Champions League Qualifying defeat away to Sparta Prague on Tuesday evening.
Crucial missed chances
Playing in a hostile ground and without several key players available from the off, including wide men Malick Fofana and Ernest Nuamah and defenders Moussa Niakhaté and Nicolás Tagliafico, this was never going to be an easy encounter for Les Gones, especially with Sparta already two weeks into their domestic season.
So it proved, as Sparta found the back of the net on 20 minutes, only for the offside flag to come up. From there, the match took on a back-and-forth character with perhaps Lyon's best chance falling to new signing Loïs Openda, who snuck in behind the defence, but was only able to force a corner (41'). As it was, though, Lyon would enter the break with the lead thanks to an own goal.

"we have to do better defensively"
Lyon would concede an equalizer just past the hour, but would then rue a missed penalty by captain Corentin Tolisso (65'), and struggled to come back after Sparta took the lead four minutes later. Despite needing to overturn this result, Lyon manager Paulo Fonseca was philosophical post-match, declaring, "The truth is, essentially, that in the first half we didn’t execute what we had prepared. Defensively, we need to do better. We had prepared well and the structure was right, but I think we made a lot of mistakes. We were better in the second half. Sparta had fewer chances than in the first, yet we conceded two goals."
Indeed, with the returns of Nuamah and Fofana, and indeed Niakhaté and Tagliafico for the second leg, hope is not lost, as OL midfielder Tyler Morton expressed post-match, saying, "We need to do better; tonight wasn't the real Lyon. The players who came off the bench brought some positives, in my opinion—that bodes well for the future."
