Paris Saint-Germain and France international Désiré Doué celebrates his 21st birthday today, days after being crowned European champion for a second time and just before heading over to North America to compete in the World Cup with Les Bleus.
Doué has enjoyed an exceptional rise. He excelled at formative club Rennes, bursting into the first team and becoming a key player. Played across the pitch, his versatility and physical impact caught the eye and meant that he was quickly swept up by PSG.
Given the nature of his rapid rise and his early move to Les Parisiens, he earned comparisons to a certain Kylian Mbappé. "I am Désiré Doué; Kylian is Kylian," he said, shirking those links.
Not that he doesn't take inspiration from the France captain or indeed other former PSG players. "Everyone is inspired by a player. For me, it is Neymar Jr.," he has previously revealed.
However, beyond his dancing feet, his incredible acceleration, his work-rate, vision, ball-striking ability, there are intangibles that separate Doué from the rest. “I already knew him from Rennes," says his teammate Ousmane Dembélé. "He is a young player bursting with talent. I think he will go far. He is very mature for his age. What has impressed me the most? His professionalism. At his age, he is really, really professional."
That has helped him succeed in what is undoubtedly a higher-pressure environment at the Parc des Princes. That being said, the opening months were tough. It wasn't until the spring of his first season at PSG that we truly began to see the best of Doué, whose name in English translates as 'Desired, Talented' - fitting.
By the latter stages of the season, he upped his rhythm. Ultimately, he registered 16 goals and 16 assists - incredible figures in a debut season at PSG, as a teenager. Two of the most important goals came in the Champions League final win over Inter Milan. His performance in Munich earned him a rare '10' rating from L'Équipe.

Whilst injuries disrupted Doué's 2025/26 season, he nonetheless confirmed his status as one of the finest players of his generation, as reflected in his receipt of the Golden Boy trophy back in December. He would, despite muscular injuries, go on to register 24 goal contributions (13 goals, 11 assists) in 41 games last season as Les Parisiens defended their UCL crown.
With two Ligue 1 McDonald's titles and two UCL titles in two years, he heads to North America with more silverware in sight. In any case, the future is bright for Doué. “He has no limits, it is the mark of champions,” says his former manager at Rennes, Julian Stéphan. “You’d have to be divine to determine what level he will reach. Will he be a Ballon d’Or candidate? Because that is maybe the question. It is very possible."
Happy Birthday, Désiré Doué!
