After an outstanding debut Ligue 1 campaign with FC Lorient, Arsène Kouassi has been voted the league's Young Player of the Season. Here's how the Burkina Faso international became one of French football's brightest emerging talents.

When FC Lorient secured the signing of Arsène Kouassi from AC Ajaccio for just €1.2 million last summer, few could have predicted the impact he would make in his first Ligue 1 campaign. Less than a year later, the 22-year-old Burkina Faso international has been voted Ligue 1's Young Player of the Season by fans after establishing himself as one of the most exciting full-backs in the French top flight. So who is the latest gem to emerge in Ligue 1 McDonald's?

A rapid rise

Born in Cocody, Côte d'Ivoire, Kouassi developed through the New Stars FC academy in Burkina Faso before making the move to Corsica with AC Ajaccio. After impressing in Ligue 2 BKT during the 2024-25 season, Lorient moved quickly to reunite the young defender with coach Olivier Pantaloni, who had overseen his development in Ajaccio.

The step up to Ligue 1 can often prove difficult for young players. For Kouassi, however, adaptation was almost immediate. Operating primarily as a left wing-back, he became one of Lorient's most reliable performers from the opening weeks of the season, combining relentless energy, athleticism and attacking quality down the flank.

A modern wing-back

Kouassi embodies the profile of the modern full-back. Blessed with explosive pace and impressive stamina, he is equally comfortable defending his own penalty area and providing width in the final third. His crossing ability quickly became a major weapon for Lorient, while his set-piece delivery added another dimension to his game.

The statistics underline that influence. In 31 Ligue 1 appearances, Kouassi registered two goals and eight assists, placing him among the division's most productive defenders. One of those goals proved particularly memorable: a superb free-kick winner against FC Nantes that highlighted the quality of his left foot. His performances also earned him the Ligue 1 Young Player of the Month award in January before fans crowned him the league's Young Player of the Season at the end of the campaign.

International breakthrough

His club form has also translated onto the international stage. Kouassi made his senior debut for Burkina Faso in 2025 and quickly became an important member of the Stallions squad. During the recent Africa Cup of Nations, he played every minute of Burkina Faso's four matches, scoring once and earning Player of the Match honours against Sudan.

Europe takes notice

Whenever a young player enjoys a breakout season in Ligue 1, interest from abroad inevitably follows.

Several clubs are already monitoring Kouassi's development. Reports have linked him with interest from the Bundesliga, where Bayer Leverkusen, Eintracht Frankfurt and VfB Stuttgart are all believed to be tracking him. In Italy, AS Roma and Genoa have also been credited with interest, while Premier League side Nottingham Forest reportedly saw a winter offer rejected by Lorient.

Closer to home, RC Strasbourg's BlueCo-backed project has also been linked with the Burkinabè international.

Given Lorient's reputation for developing talent and generating significant transfer profits, it would come as little surprise if Kouassi becomes one of the most sought-after defenders in Ligue 1 this summer.

The next step?

For now, Kouassi remains focused on his development after a remarkable first season in the top flight.

But having arrived as a relatively unknown prospect from Ligue 2, he now finds himself recognised as one of the brightest young talents in French football.

Voted Ligue 1's Young Player of the Season, admired for his attacking flair and already attracting attention from some of Europe's leading clubs, Arsène Kouassi's rise appears only just beginning. At 22 years old, the future looks exceptionally bright.
