Who is Felix Bacher? Meet Lyon’s newest signing
Olympique Lyonnais have continued to reinforce their squad ahead of the new season, completing the signing of Felix Bacher from Portuguese side Estoril Praia.
The 25-year-old has joined Les Gones on a five-year contract running until June 2031. Lyon have paid an initial €4.3 million, with a further €800,000 potentially due in bonuses, while Estoril have retained a 12.5% sell-on clause on any future capital gain.
But who is Lyon’s newest defender, and what can he bring to Ligue 1 McDonald’s?
From Tyrol to the Bundesliga
Born in Lienz, in Austria’s mountainous Tyrol region, Bacher began playing football with SC Schwaz before continuing his development at Wacker Innsbruck and the AKA Tirol academy.
He made his senior breakthrough with Wacker, initially playing for the reserve side before graduating to the first team. The defender then moved abroad for the first time in January 2020, joining SC Freiburg II.
Bacher made 23 appearances for the German club’s reserve team and helped them earn promotion from the Regionalliga Südwest before returning to Austria with WSG Tirol in 2021.
It was during his three seasons with WSG that Bacher began to establish himself. He became a regular in the Austrian Bundesliga, making 85 appearances in all competitions, and was handed the captaincy during his final campaign at the club.
Standing at 1.90 metres, the right-footed centre-back developed into an authoritative presence at the heart of the defence. His leadership qualities were evident before his departure, when he spoke of his determination to improve continually and described himself as a player driven by success.
An ever-present figure in Portugal
Bacher took the next step in his career in the summer of 2024, joining Estoril on a free transfer. The move introduced him to a more technical league and proved another important stage in his development.
He quickly became a mainstay in the Portuguese side’s defence, making 58 appearances and scoring four goals across his two seasons with the club.
His importance was particularly clear during the 2025/26 campaign. Bacher started all 34 of Estoril’s league matches and played every available minute, finishing the season with 3,060 minutes on the pitch.
The Austrian completed 88.4% of his passes, made 197 clearances and recorded 47 interceptions. He also won 90 aerial duels and scored twice, underlining the threat he can offer from set-pieces.
What kind of defender is Bacher?
Bacher is primarily a central defender, although his mobility and experience should give Lyon different options within their defensive structure.
His height naturally makes him effective in the air, but he is not simply a penalty-box defender. Bacher is comfortable receiving possession and progressing the ball, while his passing numbers in Portugal suggest he can contribute to a team looking to build from the back.
He is also accustomed to responsibility. Having captained WSG Tirol and then played every league minute for Estoril last season, the Austrian arrives with considerable senior experience despite only turning 26 in October.
Bacher has represented Austria at under-18, under-19 and under-20 level, although he is still waiting to receive his first senior international cap.
After developing in Austria, Germany and Portugal, his latest move represents the biggest challenge of his career. Lyon, meanwhile, have acquired a durable and increasingly experienced defender who appears ready to take another step forward in Ligue 1 McDonald’s.
