Dayann Methalie: TFC's academy gem
Amidst strong rumours linking him to a move across the Channel, get the latest on Toulouse FC's Dayann Méthalie as our One to Watch series continues.
A rising academy profile
Compared to clubs like Lyon, Rennes and Monaco, Toulouse aren't exactly known for being a hotbed of young French talent, but that might be changing if the evidence of recent seasons is anything by which to go. After Guillaume Restes, Kévin Keben and Shavy Babicka, another academy gem has burst into the spotlight for Les Violets. His name is Dayann Méthalie — a 20-year-old defender whose fearless runs, raw energy and emotional honesty made him one of the revelations of the last Ligue 1 McDonald’s season.
Before last season, he hadn’t played a single professional minute. Today, he's signed a new long-term contract until 2030, is sought after by some the Premier League's biggest sides and also has become a regular with France’s U21s, where his debut included a memorable brace against the Faroe Islands. “It’s crazy how fast everything has gone,” he told L’Équipe. “Not playing at all last season actually helped me. It prepared me for all of this. Now I just play my football without overthinking.”

"He's made great progress"
"We all know Dayann; we’ve seen what he’s done this season," said his captain, Rasmus Nicolaisen, towards the end of last season, full of praise for his fellow defender. "He’s made great progress and needs to play like this in more games—not just the recent ones. We’re happy with him and hope we can keep him here."
While the keeping part is yet to be determined -- Toulouse may find it too difficult to resist the transfer fees being bandied about, there's little question that Methalie proved himself in the recently concluded campaign. With 27 appearances, two goals and two assists, his dynamism was on full display over the course of the season. And if his penchant for a hefty tackle (nine bookings) was sometimes his undoing, there's little questioning his motivation and leather-lunged play on the flank, making him a young player on which to keep an eye.
