WHY ARE SUSPENSE AND SPECTACLE EVERYWHERE IN LIGUE 1 MC DONALD'S
Spectacle guaranteed!
Compared with the other major European leagues, Ligue 1 McDonald’s holds its own, starting with the 3rd-best average goals per match (3.04), behind only the Bundesliga (3.5) and Serie A (3.18), but ahead of LaLiga (3.01) and the Premier League (2.7).
For the 3rd consecutive season, the top flight is averaging more than three goals per match.
This high number of goals provides both entertainment and plenty of turnarounds during matches. Indeed, a team took the lead in the final quarter of an hour on 12 occasions across the 81 matches played this season.
Along the same lines, 59% of goals in the league are scored in the second half, the 2nd-best figure behind the Germans.
This attacking quality means Ligue 1 McDonald’s has recorded only six goalless draws in 26/27 (7%). Among foreign leagues, only Serie A has fewer.
One last telling indicator: effective playing time. No other league has a higher figure than Ligue 1 McDonald’s matches in 2026/27, with almost an hour of play (59'54)! That is nearly 2 minutes more than in Spain and Italy (2nd) and more than three minutes more than in England and Germany.
Finishing is also up to standard in Ligue 1 McDonald’s, which has the 2nd-best conversion rate for big chances (38%), behind LaLiga.
STAT: Ligue 1 McDonald’s is the one among the 5 major leagues in which there have been the fewest errors leading to a goal this season.
Ligue 1 McDonald’s: more unpredictable than the other leagues
Although PSG took sole possession of the top of the standings on Matchday 8, the battle for the top positions is particularly intense. Five clubs have already led the table after 9 matchdays (OM, ASM, LOSC, OL and PSG), whereas, for example, Barcelona has been top in Spain since Matchday 2.
As for points gaps, no other league has such a small difference between the top six (5), matched only by the Bundesliga, and it is half that of the Premier League!
Another element showing real suspense in Ligue 1 McDonald’s is the impact of the first goal. Coming on average in the 29th minute of play (only the Bundesliga is earlier, at the 27th), this opening goal is less decisive in the French top flight than in several other major leagues.
Only 68% of teams scoring first win this season in Ligue 1 McDonald’s (66% in the Premier League). In fact, 11 teams have lost in 26/27 despite having opened the scoring (15%), the highest percentage of the five major leagues.
The average goal difference between two teams is also revealing of how unpredictable matches are in Ligue 1 McDonald’s, at just 1.38. That is the 2nd-tightest margin among the major leagues (behind the Premier League at 1.33).
