Aladji Bamba: Monaco's Blois Boy heads Tyneside

Newcastle United didn't need too much data to make their move for Aladji Bamba, who just months after breaking through at AS Monaco, has already made the familiar journey across the Channel to play in the Premier League.

Just 18 games in Ligue 1 McDonald's

Talk about making a good impression. Bamba has barely burst onto the scene before heading to Tyneside. Everyone following the Principality club eagerly awaited a languid and elegant midfielder to take to the pitch in the iconic Diagonale. But when one did, it wasn't who everyone was expecting. Paul Pogba struggled to become a regular amid persistent injury problems, but it was Bamba, aesthetically similar, who filled the hole in Monaco's midfield.

He was the benefactor of several injuries for Les Monégasques last season. Injuries in defence saw Denis Zakaria slot back into the midfield, Lamine Camara missed periods of the season due to injury and the AFCON, and Pogba only began to find his rhythm towards the end of the Ligue 1 McDonald's campaign.

Opportunities arose for Monaco's academy products. Whilst Pape Cabral and Mamadou Coulibaly both had opportunities - and impressed when given them - it is Bamba who made the biggest impression.

In fact, he needed just 18 games to convince Newcastle United to invest in his potential. He made his debut off the bench in the first game of the 2025/26 Ligue 1 McDonald's season. He would accrue a further 17 appearances in the league, whilst also experiencing Champions League football, featuring five times in Europe's elite competition.

A deep-lying midfielder, his abilities quickly shone. A languid midfielder with a big stride, he has the capacity to cover large spaces and to cover ground, particularly useful when defending against transitions.

Bamba's signature move

But it his ability on the ball that catches the eye. As the season progressed and his confidence grew, a Hollywood long-range cross-field ball became a signature move that he wielded with increasing frequency. It is a ball that requires excellent technique and was valuable in helping Monaco stretch to play and creating spaces to then exploit.

Bamba has said that he was inspired by Pogba, and La Pioche's influence was clearly evident; yes, there are physical capabilities, but there are technical abilities, too, and the latter outshine the former.

The Monaco academy product remains raw, which is natural given his inexperience. But at just 20 years old, he already has UCL experience, whilst also being part of the France U20 set-up. Whilst not yet being a vocal leader - naturally - he is nonetheless a commanding presence in the midfield. Given his mix of athletic and technical abilities, it is clear why Newcastle United have bet big on Bamba. One of his idols, Pogba, made the same trip across the Channel as a young player and Bamba now follows in his footsteps.
