Pablo Pagis: Stade Rennais' next star academy product

Breton through and through
Part of a flurry of impressive summer overhaul on the part of Paris FC, Pablo Pagis joins the capital side alongside the likes of defender Diego Coppola, forward Lassine Sinakyoko and several other new faces, not the least of which is manager Liam Rosenior, back in Ligue 1 McDonald's after an ill-fated stint with Chelsea. But what is the backstory of this player, himself the son of Mickaël Pagis, a talented forward who featured for a half-dozen clubs including Stade Rennais and Marseille?
Born in the eastern city of Montbéliard, where his father was then playing for Sochaux, he followed his father's footsteps, and when Mickaël retired at Rennes, Pablo joined the Rouge et Noir academy. However, success there wasn't forthcoming, given the glut of attacking talent ahead of him in players like Desiré Doué, Jérémy Doku and Mathys Tel, and he upped sticks another Breton club, FC Lorient.
He proved an instant hit, netting ten goals for the reserves in the fourth division at age 18, but proved just short of the level necessary for the first team, despite successive loan spells at Nîmes and Laval. Back with the first team for the 2024/25 season, his form proved key to helping the team win promotion, but few could've predicted the leap he would make last season.

An ambitious project in the capital
Usually played on the left wing, Pagis is ambidextrous and skilled with the ball at his feet, and has developed an eye for goal in recent seasons, having found the net ten times in just 22 starts with Les Merlus, playing an integral role in a lengthy unbeaten run in the middle of the season. Already off to a flying start after netting in a friendly, he'll look to complement veteran attacks like Moses Simon and Ilan Kebbal, playing not only on the flank but also through the middle in a playmaking role, his versatility mirroring that of players who blossomed under Rosenior like Diego Moreira and Julio Enciso.
