After starring for Dunkerque, establishing himself at Reims and becoming Ligue 2's most expensive departure ever, Ewen Jaouen heads to Newcastle as one of France's most promising young goalkeepers.

When Ewen Jaouen returned to Stade de Reims last summer following an eye-catching loan spell with USL Dunkerque, the objective was simple: replace Yehvann Diouf and help Les Stadistes secure an immediate return to Ligue 1.

Less than a year later, the 20-year-old goalkeeper is set to leave Champagne as the most expensive player in Ligue 2 history. Newcastle United have agreed a deal worth up to €28.5 million, including bonuses, to sign the France U21 international after a breakthrough campaign that confirmed his status as one of French football's brightest goalkeeping prospects.

For Reims, it represents another remarkable piece of business. For Jaouen, it is the latest step in a meteoric rise that has taken him from Coupe de France revelation to Premier League recruit in little more than eighteen months.

From Dunkerque hero to Reims number one

Jaouen first attracted national attention during Dunkerque's remarkable Coupe de France run in 2024-25. Despite competing in Ligue 2, Les Maritimes reached the semi-finals, with the young goalkeeper producing a series of mature performances beyond his years.

Standing close to two metres tall, Jaouen combines an imposing physical presence with the technical qualities increasingly demanded of modern goalkeepers. Comfortable with the ball at his feet, commanding in his penalty area and calm under pressure, he quickly established himself as one of the most intriguing young talents in French football.

Returning to Reims following the club's relegation, he was entrusted with replacing Diouf between the posts. It proved an inspired decision.

Across the 2025-26 Ligue 2 campaign, Jaouen recorded 15 clean sheets, matching a feat previously achieved in Reims colours only by Édouard Mendy during the club's promotion-winning season in 2017-18. His performances helped keep Reims among the promotion contenders while simultaneously attracting attention from some of Europe's biggest clubs.

Why Newcastle moved quickly

Reims were aware they possessed a highly sought-after profile. At 2.00 metres tall, Jaouen offers the aerial dominance Premier League clubs covet, while his explosiveness on the goal line and impressive long-range distribution make him well suited to the modern game. According to reports in France, Brighton & Hove Albion and Tottenham Hotspur both monitored the goalkeeper, but Newcastle acted decisively after tracking him throughout the season.

The Magpies had identified him as early as November, with goalkeeping coach Shwan Jalal among those sent to observe him in person. By the end of the campaign, Newcastle had made the Breton their priority target. A four-year contract now awaits at St James' Park.

The modern goalkeeper

What makes Jaouen particularly exciting is the balance between his current level and future potential. He is proactive rather than reactive, regularly leaving his line to claim crosses and cut out danger before it develops. His positioning allows him to dominate his penalty area, while his size makes him a formidable presence in one-on-one situations.

Equally impressive is his composure in possession. Having developed within teams encouraged to build from the back, he is comfortable initiating attacks and possesses the range to bypass opposition presses with accurate long distribution.

Like any young goalkeeper, there remain areas to refine. His lateral movement and diving mechanics can improve, particularly when moving to his left, while greater consistency with the ball at his feet will come through experience. Yet these are viewed as coachable details rather than significant weaknesses. The foundations are already in place.

A future France international?

For Newcastle, Jaouen represents a long-term investment. For Reims, he becomes another academy success story and another record-breaking sale.

For the player himself, however, the ambition stretches even further. Already a France U21 international, Jaouen has openly targeted a future with the senior national team. The path remains long, but his rise over the past two seasons suggests few ceilings should be placed on his development. From Dunkerque's cup fairy tale to a record-breaking move to the Premier League, Ewen Jaouen's journey is only just beginning.
