Renato Marin arrived at Paris Saint-Germain last summer. Highly rated, the Italian got his first chance to impress for his new club over the weekend.
PSG made just three signings last summer and two of them were goalkeepers. Whilst Lucas Chevalier was brought in to play a starring role for the European champions, first-team opportunities were never going to be forthcoming for Marin, whose role was to play a back-up role to Chevalier and Matvey Safonov, who has claimed the No.1 jersey since the turn of the year.
However, whilst many clubs, including PSG historically, have opted for experience when it comes to the No.3 role between the sticks, Luis Enrique opted for youth. The club believe that he is the best goalkeeper in the world in his age group, which makes it all the more surprising that they got him on a free transfer. He arrived from AS Roma, where he opted against a contract extension.
He spent his latter developmental years at Roma, having moved across from Brazil, his place of birth. There, he represented Palmeiras and São Paulo at youth level. However, despite being born in the latter, he represents Italy at youth level. He has already made appearances for the U19s side.

Despite Luis Enrique saying that he has "liked [Marin's] training session", praising his "physical and technical qualities", it was only this weekend that he got his first chance to show his worth in Ligue 1 McDonald's; his only other appearance for Les Parisiens came in the Coupe de France win over Fontenay back in December. He kept a clean sheet on that day.
He didn't repeat that feat despite a strong display against Lorient. It was a much-changed PSG side with their eyes fixed on the second leg of their Champions League semi-final against Bayern Munich on Wednesday. And it wasn't Les Parisiens' most convincing displays.
Marin conceded from two of Les Merlus' three shots on target. There was nothing that could be done about Pablo Pagis' missile early in the first half and there was little more to have been done about Aiyegun Tosin's shot in the second, with his effort clipping off the inside of the post.
However, Luis Enrique won't be reticent to give Marin more minutes. "I say all the time that we have three high-quality goalkeepers. [Marin] is ready. He was good," said Luis Enrique post-match. Dro Fernandez added: "Renato is a great goalkeeper. He shows us that every day and he has done his work really well."
With Chevalier out for several weeks with an injury, Marin may get further chances between now and the end of the season, even if he remains a player for the future.
