With both of Lille and Marseille having already dropped points this weekend, the hosts and Rennes set up with attacking lineups, knowing that a win could do each a world of good. For Paulo Fonseca, Corentin Tolisso played a deeper role alongside Tyler Morton, while youngster Khalis Merah started on the right flank. As for the visitors, Franck Haise shifted to a 3-4-3, with Sebastian Szymanski coming in on the right flank for Ludovic Blas.
Lyon started the match the stronger, but were undone on six minutes by a simply stunning strike from Mousa Al-Taamari, who lashed a volley across goal after a ball over the top by Esteban Lepaul. Four minutes later, it was hearts in mouths for the visitors, though as Brice Samba erred in coming off his line, but Lyon couldn't quite put the ball into the net.
Undeterred, Les Gones continued to push, pressing hard and patiently working to get in crosses for Roman Yaremchuk and Endrick. Rennes would respond with a sustained spell of pressure of their own after the half hour, but it was Yaremchuk who would draw the match level, netting for the fourth time in three matches (37'), from a delicious cross by Corentin Tolisso. Four minutes later, Tolisso turned scorer, firing home a penalty with authority to give his side what would be a 2-1 halftime lead.

Just after the break, Rennes were back on level terms, with Lepaul netting his league-leading 19th goal after a clever dummied pass by his strike partner, Breel Embolo (49'). Three minutes later, though, an irrepressible Lyon retook the lead through Afonso Moreira, who ran on to a sublime through ball by Abner VinÃcius to put his side ahead 3-2. Lyon continued to push, and a brilliant run and cross from Endrick (68') nearly had Lyon doubling their lead, but for Brice Samba to spring off his line to claim.
Fifteen minute from time, though, the Brazilian would make his mark. with Lyon's pressing again the difference. After being played in by Tolisso, the teenager found the top corner to make it 4-2. Substitute Pavel Å ulc even could have added a fifth (80') only to be denied by a fine stop from Samba, but as it was, Lyon ended the match convincing winners, moving to third place, two points clear of Lille in fourth. As for Rennes, their four-match winning run has been snapped, but are still within two points of Les Dogues, their Champions League chances hanging by a thread.
Esteban Lepaul has now scored ten Ligue 1 McDonald's goals in 2026 -- no French player has scored more in Europe's top five leagues.
