Russell-Rowe in action for Toulouse against Monaco

Jacen Russell-Rowe arrived at Toulouse as a man on a mission, with the World Cup in his native Canada coming up. As the end of the Ligue 1 McDonald's season approaches, he is now beginning to flex his muscles.

Russell-Rowe: Toulouse's Gladiator

Russell-Rowe arrived at Toulouse from Columbus Crew back in January for a reported €2m fee. "Since I was a kid, I have always dreamed of playing in Europe," he said upon signing for the Ligue 1 McDonald's side. "I am so proud to have achieved this objective."

He has other objectives, notably ones that he could achieve this summer when the World Cup comes around. That tournament will take place in Canada, as well as the USA and Mexico. Given the prowess of Jonathan David, formerly of Lille OSC, and Promise David, he may not be a starter, but he will at least want to be an option at Jesse Marsch's disposal. His name is very similar to a certain New Zealand actor and, like Russell Crowe, Russell-Rowe is ready to fight for his spot.

His qualities are already appreciated by Marsch. "[I want] to see him in a similar role to Jonathan David: well placed in build-up and finds solutions to be involved, whilst also being a constant threat in front of goal," said the Canada manager.

That comment came after Russell-Rowe scored what - to date - is his only goal with the national team. It came back in January, during a 1-0 win over Guatemala in a friendly that fell outside of the FIFA calendar. He will look to add to that tally, but not before finishing the season strongly with Le TéFéCé.

A first goal in violet for Russell-Rowe

The Canadian netted his first goal for his new club over the weekend. Benefitting from just his third league start for Le TéFéCé, he popped up at the back host to stroke home Dayann Methalie's ball across the face of goal. That finish halved the deficit before Emersonn levelled up late on at The Stadium (2-2).

Russell-Rowe will be happy to have opened his account for Toulouse. At his previous club, Columbus Crew in the MLS, he scored 22 goals in 109 games in all competitions, although his impact is also measured in his contribution in build-up and ability to be a focal point for his teammates.

He said that signing for Toulouse represented the "best day of [his] life". Netting his first goal in Ligue 1 McDonald's was special, too, and he will also be desperate to have a special summer.
