Matias Fernandez-Pardo starred in Lille’s crucial 2-1 win over Rennes, scoring once and providing an assist as the young Belgian continues to grow in importance for Bruno Génésio’s side.

Matias Fernandez-Pardo is beginning to establish himself as one of Lille OSC’s most promising attacking talents, and his decisive display in the 2-1 victory over Stade Rennais could prove an important step in his development.

The young Belgian is quickly becoming an effective attacking option for Bruno Génésio’s side, and could play a crucial role in the coming weeks as Les Dogues push to secure European football before the end of the season.

Lille claimed an important win away to Rennes, a side that had been unbeaten since the return of Franck Haise. Once again, Fernandez-Pardo played a central role in the victory.

Decisive against Rennes

The 21-year-old opened the scoring early in the match, latching onto a ball from Nathan Ngoy before finishing confidently past Brice Samba after bursting in behind the Rennes defence.

It was exactly the type of attacking movement that Génésio has repeatedly demanded from his young forward.

Fernandez-Pardo’s influence continued in the second half. Operating on the right flank, he accelerated past Quentin Merlin before delivering a precise pass into the area for Hákon Haraldsson to convert, doubling Lille’s lead and placing the visitors firmly in control.

The Belgian’s combination of pace, intelligent movement and creativity caused problems throughout the evening, marking one of his most complete performances of the season.

A talent Lille know well

Fernandez-Pardo’s rise has been closely followed by the club. The forward initially spent seven years in Lille’s academy before leaving in 2020 to join Belgian side KAA Gent.

It was in Belgium where he began to make his breakthrough at senior level. During his time with Gent, he made 28 appearances, scoring 10 goals and registering two assists, showcasing the attacking qualities that convinced Lille to bring him back to the club.

Returning to LOSC in 2024, Fernandez-Pardo explained that the club offered the ideal environment for his development. “I came back because everything is here for young players to develop now,” he said after scoring his first Ligue 1 goal earlier in the season.

He also admitted that confidence was a key factor in his game. “Sometimes I mess up the final move because I choose to pass rather than finishing myself. People tell me this, and it’s sinking in.”

Following a familiar Lille pathway

Lille supporters will recognise a similar trajectory. The club previously signed striker Jonathan David from Gent in 2020, and the Canadian international went on to become one of the most prolific forwards in the club’s modern history.

David has since made over 200 appearances for Lille, scoring close to 100 goals across all competitions and becoming a key figure in the team’s attack. Fernandez-Pardo will hope to follow a similar path.

Confidence building at the right time

Head coach Bruno Génésio has long spoken about the forward’s potential and believes confidence will be key to unlocking his full abilities.

“He’s showing his potential,” Génésio said earlier in the season. “He has technical qualities that complement his speed.”

With five league goals to his name this season and growing influence in Lille’s attack, Fernandez-Pardo appears to be finding his rhythm at a crucial stage of the campaign.

If he continues on this trajectory, the Belgian forward could become a decisive figure for Lille as they push for European qualification in the final weeks of the season.
