Few players in Ligue 1 McDonald's embody resilience quite like Jean-Philippe Gbamin. A decade after his professional debut with RC Lens, the Ivorian midfielder has battled major injuries, long absences, and the relentless uncertainty that shadows a player whose trajectory has been repeatedly interrupted. Now at 30, he is writing a new chapter at the FC Metz.

When Gbamin returned to France this summer after spells in Germany, England and Turkey, he insisted it was “a choice of the heart and of reason.” The numbers back that up. With 12 Ligue 1 McDonald's appearances, 1 goal, and 1 assist, the Ivorian has become a stabilising presence in Stephane Le Mignan's midfield, offering athletic coverage, maturity, and an ability to accelerate play from deep.

The Long Road Back

Gbamin’s story is inseparable from the hardships he has endured. From Lens to Mainz, he developed into one of the Bundesliga’s strongest young midfielders - enough to earn a major Premier League move to Everton in 2019. Then came the setbacks: a rupture of the quadriceps tendon, an Achilles injury, and repeated interruptions that limited him to only a handful of appearances.

Yet those who know him best were never surprised by his determination. In his own words, he “rapidly took conscience of the chance he had” when he entered the RC Lens academy at 12. That discipline, forged early, would be essential for surviving what came later.

Returning to France

Gbamin made his return to French football in the 2023-2024 season, and he picked Dunkerque in Ligue 2 BKT as his landing spot. Away from the pressure, he picked up his career again in France, making 21 appearances and scoring two goals for the northern side before a move back up the pyramid to FC Nantes in 2024-2025. After 15 appearances at Stade de la Beaujoire and a quick stint in Switzerland with FC Zurich - it would be FC Metz that signed the midfielder this summer.

In a new environment as a promoted side in Ligue 1 McDonald's, Gbamin would go from strength to strength. His first goal in the league in September marked not only a personal milestone but saw the mark of a player discovering himself again. The timing is ideal: with more than 300 senior appearances now behind him, the Ivory Coast attacker is playing with the composure of a veteran who has nothing left to prove, and only positives to add for Metz.

Back With the Elephants

His return to form hasn’t gone unnoticed on the international stage. Émerse Faé has recalled him to the Ivory Coast CDI squad for the November FIFA break, where the African champions will meet Saudi Arabia and Oman as part of their preparation for the 2025 AFCON.

It is Gbamin’s first call-up since a difficult period marked by injuries and absences. For a player who once learned his trade watching Yaya Touré, being back in orange carries special weight.
