It was a busy evening of action in South America as the qualifiers for next summer's FIFA World Cup continued.
It was a potentially historic evening in Buenos Aires as Argentina faced Venezuela. Former PSG forward Lionel Messi netted a brace, with Inter Milan's Lautaro Martinez netting the other goal as France's opponents in the 2022 World Cup final beat Venezuela 3-0.
Nicolas Tagliafico, who rejoined Lyon this summer following the expiry of his contract at the end of last season, was on the teamsheet for Lionel Scaloni's side. However, all eyes were on Messi, who was playing in what was potentially his last game on Argentinian soil. His post-match comments seemed to suggest as much.
"There are so many emotions. I've experienced many emotions on this field. It's always a joy to play in Argentina with our people. I'm very happy. Being able to finish in this way here is what I always dreamed of," said the former PSG forward.

He said that he was yet to make a decision on his participation at the World Cup next summer, as his time on the international stage draws to an end. If that is to be the former Barcelona forward's last game in Argentina, he finished with a flourish.
Elsewhere, PSG captain Marquinhos started in Brazil's 3-0 win over Chile. Chelsea forward Estevao was on the scoresheet, as was former Lyon midfielder Lucas Paqueta and another former Gone, Bruno Guimaraes. There were more familiar faces to Ligue 1 McDonald's fans on the bench in the form of former Strasbourg midfielder Andrey Santos, who returned to parent club Chelsea are the summer. Monaco's Caio Henrique was also on the bench, as well as Lille defender Alexsandro, who received his first call-up to the Selecao at the end of last season. Vanderson, initially called up for this international break, missed out due to injury.
On Chile's team, there were a pair of recognisable faces in the form of former Toulouse wing-back Gabriel Suazo, who now plies his trade in Spain with Sevilla and former Monaco defender Guillermo Maripán, who plays for Torino in Serie A.
There were two familiar names on Ecuador's team as they saw out a goalless draw against Paraguay. PSG's Willian Pacho was a rock at the heart of the defence, whilst Kendry Paez, on loan from Chelsea at Strasbourg, was in the attack.
