Luis Henrique scored his sixth goal of the season for OM

On a raucous and thrilling evening at the Stade Vélodrôme, Olympique de Marseille staged an important comeback against rivals AS Monaco, running out 2-1 winners and moving ahead of the Principality side in to second place.

Changes and a bright start

Marseille, having impressed in beating Lens last weekend, made no changes save Adrien Rabiot playing in a slightly more advanced position. After a frustrating loss to SL Benfica in the UEFA Champions League in the week, Monaco manager Adi Hütter would ring the changes, bringing Christian Mawissa, Sougountou Magassa, Mohammed Salisu and Folarin Balgoun in to the eleven, with the American making his first start since returning from injury.

From the off, Hütter's changes looked to pay dividends, as Balogun smartly linked with Eliesse Ben Seghir for the game's first chance, only for the teenager to be denied by Geronimo Rullí. Their opposite numbers would respond, though and both Neal Maupay and Mason Greenwood would have efforts denied. In the first twenty minutes. From there, the intensity dropped somewhat before Aleksandr Golovin broke the deadlock shortly before the interval.

Marseille come roaring back

After the break, Marseille were eager to get back into the match, and did so after a fine block from Pierre-Emile Højberg, the Dane having taken the ball off the feet of Wilfried Singo. From close range, Luis Henrique beat Radoslaw Majecki to level the match just before the hour. From there, both managers made changes as they chased a win, with Rulli and Majecki both proving themselves decisive.

With just two minutes on the clock, though, an unlucky handball was flagged against Mawissa and Greenwood stepped up to give the hosts the lead, slotting the ball calmly past Majecki for his ninth goal of the season, moving into second place in the scoring charts (and his team into second place) in the process. Monaco will hope to rebound Saturday against a dangerous Toulouse FC side, while Marseille will face AS Saint-Étienne on Sunday evening in the penultimate round of fixtures for 2024.

THE STAT:

Luis Henrique and Mason Greenwood have combined for 15 goals in Ligue 1 this season, the best total for two teammates in the league save PSG's Bradley Barcola and Lee Kang-In.
