After winning at Rennes and recording another successful outing in the Champions League against Bologna, Lille returned to action to face Ligue1's bottom side away from home. It was all going to plan when Lille went ahead twice to lead 2-1 going into the rest of the second half, but a late goal from Arnaud Nordin saw MHSC take away a potentially precious point in the race to stay up.
The first half was tight between the two sides, with the first chance coming on the 39th minute Bakkar tested Lecomte with a strike outside the box. Savanier reacted well for the hosts when a first-time shot from a tight angle was deflected by Lucas Chevalier's fingertips. Then, right before the break, Jordan Ferri was penalised for a foul on Fernandez Pardo in the box as Lille were given a penalty by the referee. Jonathan David would step up and convert accordingly to open the scoring for Les Dogues (44'). Only a minute later, Montpellier found a quick-fire equaliser through Sylla's header, assisted wonderfully by Téji Savanier (45+1').
The second half then saw Les Dogues retake control. Jonathan David fired Lille ahead with his brace in the game, finishing with a strike that rocketed into the back of the net (54'). The away side thought they had got the job done against Ligue 1's bottom club, but MHSC would manage to pull off one of their best moments of the season so far. Nordin fired past Lecomte in the dying seconds of the game, yet referee Benoît Millot signalled a handball and blew to rule out the goal. VAR then intervened, and corrected the referee's decision to still uphold the goal : sending the Mosson into raptures right at the very death of the game.
A feisty end to the match would see two red cards given to Lille in 13 minutes of injury time. Les Dogues had a huge chance to retake their lead, but Haraldsson couldn't find a miracle finish.
Only Harry Kane has scored more goals than Jonathan David (7) with a Top 5 European club in official competition this season. 47% of those goals were scored from the penalty spot this season.
