Several Ligue 1 players were in international action this past weekend and here's a quick recap of those representing their countries outside of the UEFA fixtures.
Morocco 5-0 Central African Republic
Morocco hosted the Central African Republic at Honneur Stadium on Saturday as part of the qualification process for the African Cup of Nations. Paris Saint-Germain's Achraf Hakimi and Olympique de Marseille's Azzedine Ounahi—currently on loan to Panathinaikos in the Greek Super League—played key roles in the dominant win.
Ounahi scored a brace, and Hakimi also found the back of the net in the first half, which saw the home side score four goals to take a 4-0 advantage into halftime. Morocco added one more goal in the second half to seal the 5-0 victory. These two teams will meet again on Tuesday as the AFCON qualification process continues.
Guinea 4-1 Ethiopia
Guinea and Ethiopia played on Saturday at Alassane Ouattara Ebimpé Olympic Stadium. The National Elephants' starting 11 featured three players from Ligue 1: Le Havre's Abdoulaye Touré, RC Strasbourg's Saïdou Sow, and Montpellier Hérault SC's Issiaga Sylla. Off the bench, Guinea counted on LOSC Lille's Mohamed Bayo to bolster its attack in the contest.
Guinea recorded three goals in the first half and added one more goal minutes coming out of halftime to have a 4-0 advantage. Ethiopia would score one goal but couldn't mount any comeback and will need to turn the page. Guinea will face Ethiopia again on Tuesday as part of the qualification process for the African Cup of Nations.
United States 2-0 Panama
Former PSG manager Mauricio Pochettino began his era with the U.S. and faced off against Olympique de Marseille's Michael Amir Murillo and the Panamian squad. The United States had initially called up AS Monaco's Folarin Balogun, but after the player suffered an injury in the win against Stade Rennais, he didn't travel for this set of friendly matches.
After a scoreless first half, the Americans broke the scoreless deadlock with two goals in the second half to take a 2-0 win and start the Pochettino era off on the right foot.
Olympique Lyonnais' Tanner Tessmann saw his first minutes under Pochettino, coming off the bench to play 23 minutes for the Argentine manager. Tessmann will be part of the squad that's traveling to Mexico for the final friendly of this window for the United States.
