Theo Bair: Auxerre's Canadian striker returns from loan hungry for success
Theo Bair announced his return to Auxerre in style on Saturday evening, scoring twice in Will Still's first match in charge as the Burgundy side comfortably defeated Lusitanos Saint-Maur 5-2.
Starting alongside several of Auxerre's new arrivals, Bair struck twice in the opening half to give the Ligue 1 side complete control before Aristide Zossou, highly-rated Chinese teenager Xiangxin Wei and youngster Liamfia Dioubaté completed an emphatic victory.
For Bair, however, the result represented more than just a successful pre-season outing. It was the first opportunity to remind everyone why Auxerre invested in him two summers ago.
A season of promise interrupted
The 26-year-old spent the 2025/26 campaign on loan at Swiss Super League side Lausanne-Sport, where he enjoyed an encouraging first half of the season.
Bair scored six league goals across 23 appearances and quickly established himself as one of Lausanne's most dangerous attacking outlets. Standing at 1.91 metres, the Canadian combined his physical presence with intelligent movement, giving defenders problems both in the air and running into space.
His momentum, however, came to an abrupt halt midway through the campaign after suffering a syndesmotic ankle ligament injury in January.
The setback ruled him out for an extended period and, despite returning before the end of the season, he was unable to rediscover the form that had made him one of Lausanne's key attacking threats during the opening months.
It also had international consequences.
Having remained on the fringes of Jesse Marsch's Canada squad throughout the cycle leading into the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Bair ultimately missed out on selection for the tournament on home soil. Instead of representing Canada at the nation's biggest footballing moment, he watched from afar as Marsch's exciting young side continued their rise on the international stage.
Speaking during the World Cup, Bair praised the aggressive, high-pressing identity Marsch has instilled within the Canadian national team, insisting the country now possesses the quality and belief to trouble anyone.
While disappointed personally, the forward remained optimistic about Canada's future and spoke warmly about a talented generation led by stars such as Alphonso Davies. Now, though, his focus is entirely on club football.
After Lausanne opted not to make his move permanent, Bair returned to Auxerre with another opportunity to establish himself in Ligue 1. His career has already taken him from the Vancouver Whitecaps in MLS to Norway with HamKam, Scotland with St Johnstone and Motherwell—where he enjoyed a breakout campaign with 15 goals—before arriving in France in 2024. That varied journey has forged an experienced striker still entering what should be the prime years of his career.
Will Still's arrival could also offer the perfect reset. Known for demanding intensity from his forwards and encouraging aggressive pressing, the new Auxerre head coach may find Bair's athletic profile particularly useful as he begins implementing his ideas ahead of the 2026/27 campaign.
Saturday's brace certainly offered an early reminder of what the Canadian can provide. With Lassine Sinayoko's future still uncertain and competition for places beginning to take shape, Bair has wasted little time staking his claim. Pre-season results should never be over-interpreted, particularly against lower-league opposition, but confidence can be invaluable for a striker.
If he can stay fit after the injury frustrations of last season, Theo Bair may yet have an important role to play in Auxerre's next chapter under Will Still.
