Who is new Troyes signing Patrick Beach?

It has been a breakout summer for Patrick Beach, who shone during Australia's FIFA World Cup campaign. His reward is a move to Ligue 1 McDonald's and ESTAC Troyes.

Across the world and back

At only 22, the Aussie goalkeeper has already had quite the experience. At 18, he left his native Australia in order to make a career in Europe. He would join Larne FC in Northern Ireland, then Dundalk FC in Ireland, before then signing for Ipswich Town, at the time in the third tier of English football.

However, failing to obtain a visa, he was forced to return to Australia, where he would continue to develop at Central Coast Mariners before then joining Melbourne City, part of the City Group back in 2023. In his first season as a starting goalkeeper for Melbourne City (in 2025), he was crowned A-League champion.

Things move quickly. In November, his performances caught the eye of Tony Popovic, who called Beach up to the national team for the first time. By June, he was in the starting line-up of a World Cup match, displacing veteran captain Matt Ryan. Not only that, but his eight saves in the 2-0 win over Turkiye were the most of any goalkeeper in a World Cup game since Rustu Recber for Turkiye back in 2002.

It was not always a given that Beach would be a goalkeeper. Growing up, he was a centre-back. However, he asked to switch positions at the age of 14. He was in part inspired by his father, who had played the position, whilst the hand-to-eye coordination skills that he learnt from playing softball were also conducive to a switch.

It paid off. Popovic didn't even try and justify what was a big decision to drop Ryan for the World Cup. "I just wanted to see Patrick play; that's why I made the decision," he would say.

Popovic would come in for some criticism when, in the crucial penalty shoot-out against Egypt in the Round of 32, he opted to bring on Ryan for Beach. Ryan, formerly of RC Lens, would fail to make a save in the shootout and the Socceroos would exit the competition.

Former Australia goalkeeper Mark Bosnich said that we were "witnessing the emergence of a star" in Beach. In order to continue to follow that emergence, you will have to follow Troyes this season.

L'ESTAC were promoted back to Ligue 1 McDonald's last season and have benefitted from being part of the City Group network to secure Beach's arrival this summer. The goalkeeper has signed a five-year deal with the French club.

Beach has made the trip across the world, back, and now back again. This time, he will hope for a more extended stay in Europe.
