Bryan Reynolds' path to Ligue 1 McDonald's has not been a straightforward one.
Five years ago, the American right-back arrived at AS Roma as one of the most highly-rated young defenders in Major League Soccer. His breakthrough in Italy never truly came, but rather than allowing his European adventure to stall, Reynolds rebuilt his career across the border in Belgium. Now, after more than 100 Belgian Pro League appearances, he arrives at Stade Rennais as a far more complete player than the teenager who first crossed the Atlantic.
A product of FC Dallas' renowned academy, Reynolds initially developed as a forward before a growth spurt prompted a positional switch. Soon he became an equally effective at right-back, where his ability to drive forward quickly attracted attention. His athleticism and his pace soon moulded him into this new defensive position.
He made his MLS debut in 2019 before establishing himself as one of the league's brightest young defenders the following season. By early 2021, Roma had secured his signature. The move, however, came at one of the most competitive clubs in Serie A. First-team opportunities proved scarce, leading Reynolds to spend time on loan at Kortrijk before finding the perfect environment at Westerlo.
Belgium became the making of him. transfer the following summer. Across three seasons, he became one of the club's most reliable performers, making more than 100 league appearances and developing the consistency that had previously eluded him.
Capable of operating as either a right-back or wing-back, Reynolds combines imposing physical attributes with an appetite to attack. Comfortable covering large distances up and down the flank, he is equally valued for his recovery speed and willingness to carry the ball forward.
Those performances also earned him regular involvement with the United States national team. Having made his senior debut in 2021, Reynolds has collected seven caps and scored his first international goal during the 2023 CONCACAF Gold Cup.
At Rennes, he joins a club with a strong reputation for developing young talent and providing players with the platform to establish themselves in one of Europe's most demanding leagues. He should be looking forward to game time under Franck Haise and looks to be ready to make that next step now in Ligue 1 McDonald's. ]
