At the end of June, Diogo Sousa completed a move to RC Strasbourg Alsace, signing a five-year deal. Who is Le Racing's newest midfield recruit?

Vitória de Guimarães through and through

Up until his move to the Meinau on 24th June, Sousa had been a one-club man. Born in Guimarães in January 2006, the 20-year-old midfielder would go on to join the city's club, Vitória de Guimarães. He would join at the age of eight and come through the ranks, featuring for their reserve side before making the step up to the first team last season. He was always seen as one of the club's most promising emerging talents as he came through the age groups.

His steady, linear progression was also mirrored in his performances for the Portugal national team. Having begun with the U15s, he has progressed steadily through the age ranks and, back in March, made his first appearance for Portugal's U21 side; he currently has two caps to his name with the U21s and will now look to make a breakthrough into the senior side, as he did with Vitória de Guimarães last season.

Last season was his first as a regular in the senior side. It was an accomplished season, too, as he made 22 appearances in the top flight (29 in all competitions), scoring once and registering one assist during that time.

'It was a positive season for me' - Sousa

"This season was important for me in terms of development, especially defensively," he said towards the end of the campaign. "We have a very good league (Liga Portugal) with many good players. I managed to improve a lot both offensively and defensively. It was a positive season for me. I played a lot of games, a lot of minutes, and it was undoubtedly very important for me."

In his debut - and ultimately only - season with his formative club, Sousa led Vitória de Guimarães to a top-half finish in Liga Portugal (9th, 42 points, 12 wins, six draws, 16 defeats).

The versatile midfielder's qualities stood out to Le Racing, who moved quickly to secure the young talent. At the Meinau, he joins a talented midfield. Valentin Barco has announced his impending departure from Le Racing. The Argentine thrived alongside Samir El Mourabet, who is currently impressing with Morocco at the World Cup. Sousa could be the player to take Barco's place in the starting XI heading into the 2026/27 Ligue 1 McDonald's season.

With a contract running until the summer of 2031, Sousa looks to be part of the future of Le Racing's midfield.
