Amine Gouiri emerged as Algeria's hero on Tuesday night, scoring the decisive goal in a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Jordan that keeps the Fennecs alive at the FIFA World Cup.

After suffering a humbling 3-0 defeat to Argentina in their opening Group J fixture, Vladimir Petković's side arrived in Santa Clara knowing that anything less than victory would leave their qualification hopes hanging by a thread. They eventually secured the result they desperately needed, but only after surviving a major scare against a fearless Jordanian side.

Algeria dominated possession from the outset and fashioned the better openings during the early exchanges. Gouiri flashed an effort into the side-netting inside the opening minutes, while Riyad Mahrez squandered a promising one-on-one opportunity as the Fennecs searched for an early breakthrough.

Instead, it was Jordan who struck first. A costly error in midfield allowed Stade Rennais forward Mousa Al-Tamari to launch a swift counterattack before Nizar Al-Rashdan finished confidently to hand the underdogs a shock lead shortly before half-time. Algeria, despite controlling the ball, looked short of ideas and went into the break facing the prospect of a second consecutive World Cup defeat.

Petković responded with attacking changes at the interval and his side gradually increased the pressure. Jordan goalkeeper Yazeed Abulaila was called into action on several occasions, while Gouiri and Ibrahim Maza both went close as Algeria searched for an equaliser.

Their breakthrough finally arrived in the 69th minute. Mahrez delivered a dangerous corner into the area and substitute Nadhir Benbouali powered a header beyond Abulaila to level the scores.

Fennecs complete late comeback

With momentum now firmly on their side, Algeria continued to push forward and completed the turnaround eight minutes from time. Another set-piece caused chaos in the Jordanian penalty area and Gouiri reacted quickest at the far post, poking home from close range to spark jubilant celebrations among the Algerian players and supporters.

The goal capped a mixed evening for the Olympique de Marseille forward, who had struggled to impose himself for long periods before producing the decisive moment when his country needed him most. It was, however, Gouiri's first-ever World Cup goal.

The victory moves Algeria onto three points and sets up a decisive final group-stage encounter against Austria. Jordan, meanwhile, become the first side in Group J to be eliminated after suffering back-to-back defeats.

For Algeria, the performance was far from convincing. For Gouiri, however, one instinctive finish may yet prove the turning point of his nation's World Cup campaign.
