AS Monaco striker Folarin Balogun played a decisive role as the United States secured qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup knockout stages with a 2-0 victory over Australia in Seattle on Friday evening.

After both nations opened their campaigns with victories, top spot in Group D was on the line at the Lumen Field. Mauricio Pochettino’s side ultimately proved too strong, producing an impressive first-half display before surviving a late Australian push to claim all three points.

With Christian Pulisic unavailable through injury, Balogun once again led the line for Team USA and quickly became the focal point of the hosts’ attacking play. The former Reims forward was heavily involved in the opening goal after 12 minutes. Collecting possession on the left flank, Balogun burst beyond Alessandro Circati before delivering a dangerous low cross. Under pressure, Cameron Burgess could only divert the ball into his own net, handing the hosts an early advantage.

The Americans continued to dominate proceedings, with Weston McKennie pulling the strings in midfield and Australia struggling to contain the pace and movement of Pochettino’s front line. McKennie nearly doubled the lead with a powerful header before Balogun again threatened after another incisive attacking move.

US take two-goal lead

The second goal eventually arrived just before the interval. Following a set-piece situation, Alex Freeman reacted quickest inside the penalty area to head home from close range. Although initially ruled out for offside, a VAR review confirmed the goal, sending the home crowd into celebration and giving the United States a deserved two-goal cushion at the break.

Australia improved after the restart and introduced Watford winger Nestory Irankunda, whose pace immediately offered a greater attacking threat. The Socceroos created several promising opportunities, with Harry Souttar notably missing a gilt-edged chance late on, while claims for a penalty after a challenge on Irankunda were waved away.

Balogun almost added a third goal midway through the second half after being released by Tyler Adams, but Circati recovered brilliantly to deny the Monaco striker. The 24-year-old nevertheless produced another influential display after his opening-match brace against Paraguay.

The victory guarantees the United States a place in the knockout rounds and leaves Pochettino’s side firmly among the tournament’s early contenders. For Australia, defeat means qualification remains in their own hands heading into the final group-stage fixture.
