There was a moment inside the Roazhon Park on Sunday evening when everything suddenly clicked for Stade Rennais FC.
For over 70 minutes against Paris FC, Rennes had dominated possession, territory and chances without reward. Then, in the space of just two minutes, Estéban Lepaul and Breel Embolo transformed frustration into euphoria and, in the process, may have defined Rennes’ season.
Trailing after Willem Guebbels’ opportunistic opener, Rennes looked short of inspiration until Lepaul rose highest to meet Quentin Merlin’s corner with a thumping near-post header. Before Paris FC had even recovered, Embolo produced an instinctive flicked finish from Arnaud Nordin’s cross to complete a dramatic turnaround and secure a 2-1 victory.
The celebrations that followed were not only about another comeback. They were about Europe returning to Brittany.
The victory guaranteed Rennes European football for next season and further highlighted the growing importance of the Lepaul-Embolo partnership under Franck Haise.
Together, the duo now have 28 Ligue 1 goals this season. Lepaul has emerged as one of the stories of the French campaign, scoring 20 league goals overall — including 19 for Rennes — and putting himself firmly in contention for the Ligue 1 Golden Boot.
His consistency has been remarkable. Twelve goals in his last fourteen league appearances have carried Rennes through the spring and transformed the club’s ambitions. Signed from Angers SCO last summer for €13.5m, the 26-year-old has rapidly evolved from promising domestic striker into one of the most efficient forwards in Europe’s top five leagues in 2026.
Speaking earlier this week, Lepaul made it clear that he sees his future in Rennes — especially with European football now secured.
“Everything fits for staying and having a full season with Europe,” he explained. “The next step for me is to complete a full season with a club playing in Europe.”
While Lepaul has taken most of the headlines, Embolo’s contribution has been equally significant.
The Swiss international arrived late in the summer transfer window with questions surrounding his fitness and consistency after an injury-hit spell at AS Monaco. However, under Haise, he has rediscovered both rhythm and confidence.
His winner against Paris FC was his ninth league goal of the season and showcased exactly what Rennes lacked at times during their inconsistent first half of the campaign: physical presence, movement inside the box and experience in decisive moments.
Even more importantly, Embolo complements Lepaul stylistically. Where Lepaul thrives attacking spaces aggressively and finishing quickly inside the area, Embolo offers link-up play, hold-up ability and unpredictability around the box.
That balance has increasingly made Rennes look like a side capable not only of qualifying for Europe — but competing in it.
The turnaround against Paris FC also continued the impressive work of Haise since replacing Habib Beye earlier this season.
Rennes have now won eight of their last eleven matches, with the team finally finding tactical stability after months of turbulence. The recruitment strategy led by Arnaud Pouille and Loïc Désiré — focused on proven Ligue 1 profiles combined with carefully selected risks — is beginning to pay off.
Players like Quentin Merlin, Arnaud Nordin and Mousa Al-Tamari have added depth and verticality around the central attacking pair, while the atmosphere around the club has completely changed.
Sunday night ended with pyrotechnics, music blasting around Roazhon Park and supporters celebrating a return to Europe for the first time since Rennes’ Europa League campaign against AC Milan in 2024.
But beyond the spectacle, Rennes now possess something perhaps even more valuable: attacking certainty. With Lepaul entering elite goalscoring territory and Embolo rediscovering his best form, Rennes suddenly have a forward partnership capable of carrying genuine European ambitions into next season.
