Le Mans are on the verge of sealing a remarkable return to Ligue 1 after their decisive final-day clash against Bastia was abandoned deep into stoppage time following crowd trouble, while AS Saint-Étienne were forced to settle for a place in the promotion play-offs despite a commanding victory over Amiens.
In one of the most extraordinary conclusions to a Ligue 2 season in recent memory, Le Mans were leading 2-0 at the Stade Armand-Cesari and heading towards automatic promotion before the match was interrupted in added time after projectiles and flares were thrown onto the pitch. Referee Jérémie Pignard eventually decided not to resume the fixture, leaving the official outcome pending disciplinary confirmation from the LFP.
Barring an unexpected twist, however, Patrick Vieira’s side are expected to have their victory validated, which would confirm their promotion to Ligue 1 for the first time since their relegation at the end of the 2009/10 campaign.
The scenes that followed Le Mans’ second goal bordered on chaos. Robin’s strike in the first minute of stoppage time appeared to secure promotion before incidents erupted in the stands moments later. Players from both teams remained on the pitch for several minutes before eventually being sent back to the dressing rooms as officials assessed the situation.
Le Mans had earlier taken the lead through Colas in the 16th minute and weathered early pressure from Bastia before asserting control. Their defensive resilience — already among the best in Ligue 2 this season — once again proved decisive as they closed in on a 16th league win of the campaign.
The achievement would complete a sensational season for Vieira’s newly-promoted side. Having only returned to Ligue 2 this season after promotion from the Championnat National, Le Mans have exceeded all expectations and now stand on the brink of an immediate ascent to the top flight.
Saint-Étienne, meanwhile, did all they could to keep automatic promotion hopes alive. Les Verts dismantled relegated Amiens 5-0 at the Stade Geoffroy-Guichard, with Julius Duffus scoring twice and Lucas Stassin delivering a goal alongside two assists in an emphatic display.
The result temporarily placed pressure on Le Mans and significantly improved Saint-Étienne’s goal difference, but the expected confirmation of Le Mans’ win means Eirik Horneland’s side will instead have to navigate the play-offs.
Saint-Étienne are set to face the winner of the clash between Red Star and Rodez in their bid to return to Ligue 1. Red Star FC finished fourth despite being held by Montpellier, while Rodez secured their place after victory at Annecy.
At the bottom of the table, Bastia and Amiens are both set for relegation to the Championnat National following a dramatic final evening in Ligue 2, while Laval will head into the relegation play-off.
