Despite the return of captain Emanuel Emegha to the eleven, RC Strasbourg suffered a 1-0 loss away to Rayo Vallecano in the first leg of their Conference League semifinal.

Emegha back in the eleven

With a chance to take a big step towards their first-ever European final, Strasbourg played a strong eleven, weven with the absences of Guéla Doué and Valentín Barco. Emanuel Emegha, who had scored in a 4-0 second leg win against Mainz in the previous round, would lead the line, with Julio Enciso dropping to a midfield role, and Ben Chilwell also returning after a short injury absence for Gary O'Neil.

The start of the match was something of a slow burn, though. The hosts had a poorly executed free kick (8') and Chilwell had an effort from range (15'), but the overall character was somewhat muted, an aspect exacerbated by the matchbox dimensions of the pitch. Going forward, the normally dynamic wing play of Diego Moreira and Martial Godo was muted, and Rayo offered little themselves. Indeed, the halftime break would come before either keeper had a save to make.

Rayo take a narrow lead

The hosts would have the first shot on target (50') and there was a nervy moment as Mike Penders spilled the ball and made contact with a Rayo player, but the official gave no indication a penalty was an option. Four minutes later, the hosts would have the lead, with an outswinging corner met by Alemão (54'), the Brazlian's looping effort beating Penders at the near post. Ten minutes later, Penders had to be sharp again to tip a header over the bar, but neither side was closer to finding the back of the next as the match entered its final 15 minutes.

Looking for a response, O'Neil had brought on Samuel Amo-Ameyaw for Martial Godo, but the Alsatians continued to struggle to get a foothold in the game. Racing hoped they would have a penalty for a foul against defender Andrew Omobamidele (78'), but it was waved off after a VAR check. Following on from that, Racing would endure a couple nervy moments, but would return to Alsace down just the solitary goal, with everything to play for in the second leg next Thursday.
