Olympique Lyonnais extended their winning run to three matches but were pushed all the way by AJ Auxerre, eventually claiming a narrow 3-2 victory at the Groupama Stadium to consolidate their provisional 3rd place in Ligue 1.
Lyon began the contest with authority, dominating possession and pinning Auxerre deep inside their own half from the opening exchanges. Their early pressure eventually told in the 19th minute when Roman Yaremchuk opened the scoring, reacting quickest to turn in a well-delivered cross from Abner. The goal reflected Lyon’s control, with the hosts dictating the tempo and creating the clearer openings, while Auxerre struggled to gain a foothold in the game. However, despite their superiority, Lyon were unable to extend their lead, and that inefficiency proved costly. Against the run of play, Auxerre found a way back in the 35th minute, as Sinaly Diomandé capitalised on a loose ball in the penalty area following a set-piece to force home the equaliser. The goal stunned the home side and shifted the mood inside the stadium, leaving Lyon frustrated at half-time, especially after losing Mangala to injury earlier in the half.
The second period resumed at a slower tempo, with Lyon initially struggling to break down a more organised Auxerre side. Clear chances were limited, and the game risked drifting until the decisive intervention of Corentin Tolisso. Introduced just before the hour mark, the midfielder transformed the rhythm and effectiveness of Lyon’s play. In the 66th minute, he restored the hosts’ lead with a composed right-footed finish after a turnover high up the pitch, injecting fresh energy into the contest. Just five minutes later, Tolisso turned provider, delivering an inviting cross from the right that was met emphatically by Yaremchuk, who completed his brace with a well-timed run and clinical finish to make it 3-1. That quickfire double shift proved decisive, giving Lyon a cushion that their overall play had arguably merited.
Yet the match was far from over. Auxerre continued to show resilience and were rewarded in the 88th minute when Baba Okoh struck from distance, his effort taking a deflection that wrong-footed the goalkeeper and reduced the deficit to a single goal. The late goal set up a tense finale, with Auxerre committing bodies forward and Lyon forced to defend deep in the closing stages. The visitors pushed for an equaliser through set-pieces and direct play, but Lyon’s defence held firm under pressure.
The win strengthens Lyon’s position in 3rd place and keeps them within six points of second-placed Lens.
Corentin Tolisso has scored his 40th Ligue 1 goal for Lyon, only Serge Chiesa (120), Juninho Pernambucano (75) and Alain Caveglia (47) have scored more among Lyon midfielders in the club's history. He is the first OL player to score and provide an assist after coming off the bench in a Ligue 1 match since Georges Mikautadze against Le Havre in March 2025 (2 goals, 1 assist).
