Lille OSC missed the opportunity to strengthen their grip on a top-four spot as they were held to a frustrating 0-0 draw by OGC Nice at the Stade Pierre-Mauroy on Saturday evening. With Olympique de Marseille having fallen earlier in the day, Bruno Génésio’s side knew victory would open up a valuable gap in the race for European football, but a lack of cutting edge ultimately cost them against a disciplined and determined Nice outfit battling to secure their Ligue 1 status.
As expected, Lille dominated possession from the outset, pinning Nice deep inside their own half, while the visitors set up in a compact low block and looked to threaten on the break. Clear chances were at a premium in the first half, although Romain Perraud came closest to breaking the deadlock when his long-range effort took a wicked deflection and forced Yehvann Diouf into a superb fingertip save. At the other end, Nice briefly thought they had stolen the lead when Mohamed-Ali Cho surged forward before releasing Elye Wahi, who finished calmly, only for VAR to rule the goal out for a marginal offside.
The game opened up slightly after the break. Wahi was presented with a golden opportunity when Melvin Bard slipped him through on goal, but the striker hesitated with a series of stepovers, allowing Aïssa Mandi to recover and make a crucial challenge. Lille responded almost immediately and should have taken the lead themselves, with Chancel Mbemba powering a header against the post from Thomas Meunier’s cross before Hákon Haraldsson fired the rebound wide.
Lille continued to probe but struggled to find the decisive moment, and their frustration grew when a second-half penalty awarded for a challenge by Antoine Mendy on Perraud was overturned following a VAR review. Despite a wave of late substitutions, including the introduction of Olivier Giroud and Ethan Mbappé, the hosts could not break through, with Nice holding firm under sustained pressure.
In the end, it was a point that felt far more valuable for the visitors than the hosts. Lille remain in the upper reaches of the table but missed a chance to create breathing space in the European race, while Nice, thanks in large part to Diouf’s assured goalkeeping and a resolute defensive display, move another step closer to securing their top-flight survival.
