Antoine Kombouaré has garnered a reputation in recent years. Fairly or unfairly, he has been pigeon-holed as a firefighter who guides clubs out of relegation trouble. At Paris FC, he has once again assumed that role.

Kombouaré puts out another fire

Kombouaré has become a specialist at keeping clubs in Ligue 1 McDonald's. But that wasn't always his lot in life. The Kanak once featured higher up the table. At PSG, pre-QSI era, he won the Coupe de France. He also led the club into the Europa League and, at the time of his sacking in 2011, he had Les Parisiens top of Ligue 1 McDonald's.

His existence since has been that of a journeyman, with many of his mandates being to dig clubs out of trouble. That was the case at Dijon, for example. Kombouaré arrived midseason and succeeded in keeping the club in the top-flight, winning the relegation play-off at the end of the 2018/19 season.

Kombouaré then repeated that exact feat when he joined Nantes. Once again, he joined in midseason, helping the club remain in Ligue 1 McDonald's with a win in the relegation play-off. He left in 2023, but with the club teetering, he was brought back in in mid-March 2024, once again with the aim of keeping Les Canaris in the top-flight. Once again, he spared Nantes from relegation to Ligue 2 BKT and did so again in the following season before taking his leave. This season, Les Canaris have gone through three managers and are now on the brink of relegation. Kombouaré was linked with arriving for a third stint, but it was Paris FC who convinced him of a return to management.

He is working his magic once more. In the six games since his arrival, Paris FC are unbeaten, and the club are taking an average of two points per game. A spectacular 4-1 win over Monaco last weekend means that, with five games remaining in Ligue 1 McDonald's, Paris FC are now 11 points clear of the relegation play-off spot.

Kombouaré's impact has been huge, as revealed by now-former captain Maxime Lopez, who found himself on the fringes of the set-up, but who has since reclaimed his place in the line-up, starting their last two games. "The new coach brought us rigour and discipline," began Lopez. "He hit hard. I bore the consequences of it. It shocked the whole squad and showed that there wouldn't be any gifts. The training week is different. There is a higher level. No one can rest [...] there is an incredible dynamic since the arrival of the manager."

Diogo Coppola, on loan from Brighton, added that Kombouaré is a very "forthright" manager. He added, "He brought clear ideas. He knows what he wants from us. It is working, and the results show that."

Kombouaré: a long-term option?

Kombouaré, when he arrived, was seen as something of a short-term option for a short-term problem. But why shouldn't his mandate be extended? At Nantes, he also showed that he was capable of taking a team to new heights. It was under his stewardship that Nantes reached back-to-back Coupe de France finals, winning one, and leading the side into the Europa League. Despite experiments with other managers, they have not hit the same heights since.

The ambitious Paris FC, however, are all-but guaranteed to be playing top-flight football next season. That is thanks to Kombouaré, and as he guides them further and further up the table, he furthers his chances of becoming a more long-term solution.
