After recent wins over Lens and Marseille, and with only Monaco left to play among their European rivals, have Lille the best chance to finish in third place in Ligue 1 McDonald's this season? Our latest analysis looks at how things may just have turned in Les Dogues' favor.

A favorable schedule

As we analyzed in our recap of the race for the Champions League places a fortnight ago, many of the teams still in the running (Monaco, Rennes, Lyon, Lille and Marseille are all within three points of each other) still have multiple matches to play against each other. Not so Lille, who, after defeating Marseille and Lens in recent weeks have only Monaco left to play among other sides chasing Europe. While facing the Principality side will hardly be an easy task, the other five sides they have left to play (Nice, Auxerre, Toulouse, Le Havre and Paris FC) are not only not in the mix for Europe, but are likely safe from relegation themselves. With little at stake, they're less likely to give Bruno Génésio's side a stern test.

Fitness is back

With so many veteran players, the Africa Cup of Nations, and a European campaign to manage as well, absences have been a real challenge for Lille. Key players like Alexsandro, Benjamin André, Ethan Mbappé and Matiás Fernández-Pardo have all missed chunks of time through injury, while Chancel Mbemba, Aissa Mandi and Ngal'Ayel Mukau all took part in AFCON. The club still have absences, notably Hamza Igamane in attack, but the options at Génésio's disposal are as impressive as they ahve been all season

veteran experience

In addition to having players fit, Génésio can also call upon veterans who have reached the upper echelons of the world game. Olivier Giroud has won a World Cup and multiple titles in England, Thomas Meunier has impressed at every stretch of his career, Mbemba and Mandi are each centurions for their countries, and André has made more than six hundred career appearances. No other team in Ligue 1 can call on that sort of experience across their squad, and it's likely to make the difference in the final stretch.

A crafty manager

Like his captain André, Génésio's reputation is somewhat unsung outside of France, but that doesn't mean the experienced manager is lacking in talent. His impressive run of results in the Champions League two years ago is proof of that, as is his consistently qualifying his sides for Europe despite limited resources, something that was true in previous stops at Lyon and Rennes.

No more European football

Finally, while it's often mentioned as something of a Catch-22, those sides no longer involved in European football in the current campaign will often have a better chance of playing it in the next season, and after a gruelling Europe League campaign ended in the Round of 16 against Aston Villa, Lille are primed to focus solely on their remaining six Ligue 1 McDonald's matches.
