A century of resilience, identity and Bretagne pride honoured in a vibrant anniversary spectacle at Lorient on Sunday afternoon

FC Lorient celebrated their 100th anniversary on Sunday with a full day of festivities around the Stade du Moustoir, culminating in a Ligue 1 clash against Paris FC that finished 1-1. Supporters gathered hours before kick-off, with a large cortège led by the Merlus Ultras setting the tone through flares and chants, while the forecourt of the stadium hosted concerts, fan activities and appearances from former players.

The occasion also served as a reminder of Lorient’s unique trajectory in French football. Founded in 1926, the Breton club spent much of its early history outside the top tiers, building gradually through the divisions. Their rise accelerated in the late 1990s, leading to a historic triumph in the Coupe de France in 2002. That victory remains the club’s major honour and secured European football for the first time, marking a turning point in their development. Since then, Lorient have alternated between Ligue 1 and Ligue 2 but have established a reputation for stability, smart recruitment and player development.

Before kick-off, several former players returned to the pitch for a lap of honour, while supporters gathered at the club’s “mur des légendes” to reflect on key figures from across different eras. In the stands, fans wore a mix of historic and modern shirts, illustrating the club’s evolution across generations.

An iconic centenerey shirt

A standout moment came with the unveiling of the centenary shirt shortly before the match. The design features an all-black base with a reworked crest that combines elements from past and present versions of the badge, symbolising the club’s 100-year history. The shirt quickly became a focal point among supporters throughout the evening.

On the pitch, Bamba Dieng gave Lorient the lead, but Paris FC responded to secure a draw. Despite that, the result did little to overshadow the wider significance of the day, as the club marked a century of existence with strong support and a celebration that reflected both its history and identity.
