 A Parisian Prelude to Greatness

We celebrate today Ronaldinho's 46th birthday and take a look back at his time with Paris Saint-Germain. While his dazzling career is often associated with FC Barcelona and Brazil, Ronaldinho’s European adventure began in Ligue 1 with PSG. Though his time in France lasted only two seasons (2001–2003), it was a period filled with breathtaking skill, off-field tensions, and a glimpse into the genius that would later dominate world football.

In the summer of 2001, PSG pulled off a major coup by signing the 21-year-old from Grêmio for €5 million. The Brazilian had already lifted the Copa América (1999) and impressed at the 2000 Olympics, attracting interest across Europe. However, Paris became the stage for his first steps on the continent.

Under Luis Fernández, PSG saw Ronaldinho as a cornerstone for the club’s evolution. His arrival generated instant excitement in the capital.

Moments of Magic

Despite PSG’s inconsistency domestically, Ronaldinho lit up the Parc des Princes with moments of pure magic. Across 76 appearances, he scored 25 goals—many of them unforgettable.

With Mauricio Pochettino as captain, and players like Gabriel Heinze and Nicolas Anelka integrating into the squad, it was Jay-Jay Okocha who played a key mentoring role. “He was like my kid brother… he just needed someone to guide him.”

Ronaldinho’s PSG story began with a penalty against Olympique Lyonnais, followed by a brace against Rapid Vienna in Europe. His form exploded in January 2002, scoring six goals in six games.

But his defining Ligue 1 moment? A sensational brace against Olympique de Marseille in Le Classique, driving PSG to a 3–0 victory. His dribbling, flair, and joy made him unplayable.

From Paris to the World

That summer, Ronaldinho reached the summit of world football, winning the 2002 FIFA World Cup with Brazil. After one more season in Paris, he secured his dream move to Barcelona—where he would become a global icon, Ballon d’Or winner, and one of the defining players of his generation.

Feliz aniversário, Ronaldinho! 🇧🇷✨
