LOSC leapfrog Rennes and move within three points of the Ligue 1 podium after a composed performance in Brittany.

Lille claimed a valuable 2-1 victory away to Stade Rennais on Sunday evening, a result that could prove decisive in the race for UEFA Champions League qualification.

In the closing match of Ligue 1’s Matchday 26, Bruno Genesio’s side produced a disciplined performance at Roazhon Park, with Matias Fernandez-Pardo starring as both scorer and creator. His early strike set the tone before assisting Hákon Haraldsson early in the second half, giving Lille a cushion that ultimately proved decisive.

Despite a late push from Rennes following E. Lepaul’s second-half goal, the visitors held firm to secure three crucial points.

Lightning start from Lille

The visitors wasted no time asserting themselves in Brittany. After just two minutes, Lille took the lead when Fernandez-Pardo exploited a poorly aligned Rennes defence. Released by Ngoy, the forward raced through on goal before calmly finishing past Brice Samba to give the Dogues a dream start.

Lille maintained control for much of the first half, limiting Rennes to few clear opportunities. The Breton side struggled to involve Ludovic Blas between the lines, while Lille remained compact and organised defensively.

Rennes’ best moment before the break came from a set-piece when Thomas Meunier’s powerful header forced an excellent save from Samba, but Lille nonetheless reached half-time with their lead intact.

Counter-attack doubles the advantage

Just as they had in the first half, Lille struck early after the restart.

Rennes were caught out from their own attacking corner in the 47th minute, when Fernandez-Pardo led a rapid counter down the right. Showing composure, he delayed his pass before squaring for Haraldsson, who tapped into an empty net to double Lille’s advantage.

The goal dealt a heavy psychological blow to Rennes, who had finished the first half with improved momentum.

Rennes push but Lille hold firm

The hosts eventually found a way back into the contest in the 59th minute. After a deflected effort from Arnaud Nordin, the ball fell kindly to Lepaul inside the box and the striker finished from close range to reduce the deficit.

Rennes pushed hard during the final half-hour, with Franck Haise introducing several attacking substitutions as the Roazhon Park crowd urged their team forward.

However, Lille’s defensive line held firm. Ngoy produced a crucial intervention to deny Mahdi Camara, while goalkeeper Özer remained largely untroubled during the closing stages despite sustained Rennes pressure.

Lille revive their European ambitions

The result sees Lille move up to fifth place with 44 points, overtaking Rennes and closing to within three points of Lyon in third.

For Rennes, the defeat halts their recent momentum under Franck Haise and represents the coach’s first loss since taking charge.

With ten rounds remaining in the season, the fight for Champions League qualification remains wide open — and Lille have firmly reinserted themselves into the race.
