AS Monaco won their fifth straight Ligue 1 McDonald's match, 2-0 against Stade Brestois, to move into fifth place, just three points behind Lyon. Catch up on all the action from the Stade Louis-II with out match report.
Ahead of this match, the hosts were the league's form team, on four wins in a row, and a seven-match unbeaten run, including last Friday's victory over Paris Saint-Germain. Despite having performed impressively at the Parc des Princes, Monaco manager Sébastien Pocognoli would make several changes -- two of them enforced. With Caio Henrique and Vanderson unavailable through injury, Jordan Teze and Aleksandr Golovin stepped into the side, and Lucas Hradecky was back in goal.
Brest, for their part, were unchanged from the side that had beaten Le Havre in their last match, and started the sharper, with Ludovic Ajorque narrowly missing with a shot on the turn for the match's first chance. Monaco would respond in short order, though, with Folarin Balogun netting for the fourth time in as many matches. After Maghnes Akliouche was brought down in the box, the American pounced on the loose ball to give his side the lead (19'). Monaco would come close to doubling their lead on 35 minutes, but Grégoire Coudert did well to keep out Golovin's free kick.

Playing in his 200th match in Ligue 1 McDonald's for AS Monaco, Golovin was eager to get on the scoresheet and would then test Coudert early in the second half, only to be denied by a diving save from the Brest 'keeper (51'). Just past the midway point of the half, it was Balogun's turn to come close, but the American just missed finding the target with a clever chip (68').
Ten minutes on, Golovin wouldn't be denied as he bounced on a ball spilled by Coudert to make it 2-0, all but putting the match out of reach for the visitors. With the win, Monaco now sit fifth on goal difference ahead of Stade Rennais and Lille, who face each other tomorrow in the round's final match. Monaco will next have a chance to continue their push for Europe against a direct rival as they take on Lyon next weekend, while Brest will face relegation-threatened Auxerre on the road.
