FC Lorient claimed a valuable 2-1 victory over RC Lens on Saturday at the Stade du Moustoir, denying the Sang et Or the chance to move top of Ligue 1 and offering Paris Saint-Germain the opportunity to extend their lead at the summit.
Lens began the afternoon knowing a win would take them provisionally above PSG, but it was the hosts who struck first. In the 18th minute, a corner caused problems in the Lens area and Bamba Dieng reacted quickest, finishing from close range to give Lorient the lead.
The visitors gradually asserted control and created several chances before the break, but Yvon Mvogo proved inspired in goal, notably denying Florian Thauvin as Lens pushed for an equaliser.
Pierre Sage’s side finally found a way through shortly after half-time. In the 49th minute, Ibrahim Sangaré won the ball high up the pitch and Odsonne Édouard drove forward before finishing coolly past Mvogo to level the score.
With momentum on their side, Lens looked the more likely to take the lead, yet Lorient delivered the decisive blow midway through the second half.
Just moments after coming on, substitute Tosin restored the Merlus’ advantage in the 66th minute. Played in down the left, Lorient worked the ball across goal and the forward kept his composure after an initial miss to round Robin Risser and slot home.
Lens dominated the closing stages and threw men forward in search of another equaliser, but Lorient’s defence held firm while Mvogo continued to command his area.
The defeat represents Lens’ sixth league loss of the season and a missed opportunity in the title race, with PSG now able to open a four-point gap when they face FC Nantes in their next Ligue 1 fixture. For Lorient, meanwhile, the win extends their impressive home form and boosts their hopes of climbing into the top half of the table.
