Matchday 26 storylines as the Champions League race and relegation battle intensify

Matchday 26 of Ligue 1 opens at the Stade Vélodrome on Friday night and brings with it several defining narratives across the table. From the fight for Champions League qualification to the pressure of the relegation battle, this weekend’s fixtures could shift momentum across the league. Here are the key storylines to follow.

Marseille aiming to cement third place

All eyes will be on Olympique de Marseille when they host AJ Auxerre on Friday evening. Marseille arrive on the back of consecutive league victories, including a narrow 1-0 win away to Toulouse FC, and currently sit level on points with Olympique Lyonnais in the race for automatic Champions League qualification.

Under Habib Beye, OM have been difficult to beat at home. Since a defeat to FC Nantes in early January, Marseille have not lost in normal time at the Vélodrome against a French opponent.

Much of the attacking threat continues to come from Mason Greenwood, whose 14 Ligue 1 goals place him among the league’s leading scorers.

Auxerre, meanwhile, arrive fighting for survival. Christophe Pélissier’s side are just above the relegation zone but have lost only once in their last six league matches, making them a dangerous opponent despite their position in the table.

Lens continue their title push

Saturday could prove pivotal in the title race when RC Lens travel to face FC Lorient.

Lens are currently second in the table and remain firmly in pursuit of Paris Saint-Germain. A victory at the Stade du Moustoir would temporarily send them top before PSG play on Sunday.

Recent results have boosted confidence for Pierre Sage’s side, including a commanding 3-0 victory over FC Metz and a Coupe de France semi-final qualification against Lyon.

Lorient, however, have become one of the league’s hardest teams to defeat. Olivier Pantaloni’s side have lost just once in their last 14 league matches, though their challenge has been turning draws into victories.

Monaco and Brest chasing Europe

One of the weekend’s most intriguing fixtures sees AS Monaco host Stade Brestois 29.

Monaco come into the match full of momentum after a surprising 3-1 victory over PSG. Sébastien Pocognoli’s team are now pushing for a European place and could extend their winning run to five league matches.

Striker Folarin Balogun has been key to Monaco’s resurgence, scoring in three consecutive Ligue 1 matches.

Brest are also in excellent form. Éric Roy’s side are unbeaten in six league games and are quietly entering the race for European qualification. With both teams enjoying strong momentum, this could be one of the weekend’s most entertaining contests.

Lyon under pressure in Normandy

Olympique Lyonnais travel to Normandy to face Le Havre AC with their Champions League hopes under threat.

After winning their first six league matches of 2026, Lyon have suddenly stalled and are now on a three-game winless run. That dip has allowed Marseille to move ahead of them on goal difference.

Midfielder Corentin Tolisso remains a key figure, scoring a late equaliser against Paris FC last weekend.

Le Havre, meanwhile, are looking to halt a difficult run of form after three consecutive defeats.

Rennes and Lille collide in the European race

The final match of the weekend could prove decisive in the battle for European places when Stade Rennais host LOSC Lille.

Since the appointment of Franck Haise, Rennes have surged up the table. They have won all three league matches under their new coach without conceding a goal.

Another victory would extend their winning streak to five matches and strengthen their push for Champions League qualification. Lille remain firmly in the race as well. Bruno Génésio’s side sit just two points behind Rennes and have shown resilience throughout the season, often scoring late goals to salvage results.
