Having arrived at Paris FC in the winter window, 17-year-old Rudy Matondo showed on Sunday why the capital side took a big bet on the young midfielder -- learn more in our latest One To Watch.
Born in the Parisian suburb of Evry, Matondo came to football early, following in the footsteps of his brother Rabby Nzingoula, a young midfielder on the books of Strasbourg. After playing with local side US Grigny, he moved in Auxerre in 2023, eager to make the leap into the professional game. Born to Conglese parents, the move east provided him with more visibility, and he was quick to rack up appearances with France's youth sides, and even played a starring role in the team reaching the final of last summer's U-17 European Championships.
After impressing in the UEFA Youth League last season, he made his professional debut in April, and was more or less a regular for Christophe Pélissier this season, making sixteen appearances even as his side struggled to comfortably avoid the relegation battle. Lauded for his strong personality and vibrant play, like any young player, he suffered his ups and downs, but it was clear that his potential was impressive given his young age.

Paris FC have hardly had the easiest of seasons. Despite a big outlay in the summer, bringing in big names like Moses Simon, Otavio and Kevin Trapp, they have struggled in the league, leading to the recent sacking of Stéphane Gilli, with Antoine Kombouaré taking his place on the bench. Eager to improve their situation, they made several more big moves in the winter window, notably bringing in a pair of canny veterans in Ciro Immobile, the vastly experienced Italian striker, as well as Marshall Munetsi, who had proved himself a dynamic presence during his time at Stade de Reims.
Matondo's arrival, then, may have gone unnoticed, even if the fee was a surprising €15M for a player who won't turn 18 until later this week. Initially injured with an ankle issue, he fared poorly on his debut, a heavy loss to Lens, but his play against Lyon on Sunday was simply sublime. Playing on the right of a midfield three, he displayed seemingly limitless energy, allowing his fellow midfielders plenty of license to roam while keeping a potent Lyon at bay.
Speaking post-match, Kombouaré was unstinting in his praise, saying, "It's true that Rudy is being talked about because he's young, but tonight (Sunday night) he practically played a perfect game, both defensively and in his ability to distribute the ball cleanly. He showed he can deliver a great performance, and we expect him to repeat this kind of game."
With the Parisians now all but safe, we can expect that Kombouaré, suitably impressed by his young midfielder, will continue to make him a regular and allow his start to shine ever-brighter, making him One To Watch for the rest of the Ligue 1 McDonald's season.
