Toulouse celebrate the match-deciding moment in their win over Marseille in the Coupe de France

Toulouse FC edged past Olympique de Marseille to progress to the semi-finals of the Coupe de France (2-2, 4-3 on penalties).

Greenwood gives Marseille dream start

It was a night that couldn't have started any better for OM in front of their home fans at the Vélodrome. Within the first 30 seconds, Habib Beye's men were awarded a penalty after Mason Greenwood was brought down inside the Toulouse box. The Englishman stepped up himself to finish from the spot (2').

But despite the dream start, this wouldn't be an easy night for Marseille, far from it. The home side would have been full of confidence having bettered Olympique Lyonnais in Ligue 1 McDonald's on Sunday night (3-2), but their advantage was wiped out by Yann Gboho, who was in the right place at the right time to bundle over from a corner in which Charlie Cresswell managed to outmuscle Nayef Aguerd to get an effort on goal. Geronimo Rulli's parry was straight at Gboho, who levelled up from close range (13').

The second half mirrored the first, with Marseille taking the lead before quickly ceding their advantage to the hosts, who won this competition three seasons back. Igor Paixao was excellent off the bench against Lyon over the weekend, and he once again made an impact here, rattling an effort off the inside of the post (55'), but that advantage lasted just four minutes.

Cresswell was involved in the first and he netted the second, heading home the equaliser (59'). He was taken off injured just moments later, but despite the Englishman's exit, Carles Martínez Novell's side held firm to take the Coupe de France quarter-final to penalties.

Le TéFéCé drew first blood in what was a tense shootout at the Vélodrome, as Leonardo Balerdi missed his spot-kick. However, there was a giant roar when, with the very next spotkick, Cristian Casseres missed. Aguerd then levelled up with his kick, but then Strasbourg loanee Pape Bemba Diop gave Toulouse the chance to win it.

Marseille's unwanted penalty record worsens

It was Ethan Nwaneri, on loan from Arsenal, who stepped up next. A miss from the Englishman was knock out OM and he struck his penalty over the bar, sending Toulouse into the semi-finals at Marseille's expense.

OM's torrid run in penalty shoot-outs continues. They have now lost nine of their last 12 in all competitions.

Toulouse can now look forward to the next game in the competition. They are joined by Strasbourg, who beat Ligue 2 BKT side Reims, whilst Nice also edged Lorient on penalties to secure their spot. There is just one more spot in the semi-finals up for grabs, when Lens face Lyon on Thursday night.
