The Spanish teenager is already finding opportunities in Ligue 1 — and could be set for another step forward this weekend.

When Paris Saint-Germain signed Dro Fernández from FC Barcelona in the winter transfer window, the move was as much about projection as it was about the present. Highly regarded at La Masia but limited to fleeting senior minutes in Catalonia, the 18-year-old arrived in Paris searching for something essential to any young talent’s development: opportunity. He has not had to wait long.

Trusted by Luis Enrique

Under Luis Enrique, PSG have shown a willingness to trust youth within a clear tactical framework. Fernández has already been integrated into the midfield rotation, benefiting from a 4-3-3 structure that appears to offer him greater clarity than he previously enjoyed. Technically assured and comfortable receiving between the lines, he brings a slightly more vertical dimension to the Paris engine room, looking to accelerate play and attack space whenever possible.

His first Ligue 1 start came in last weekend’s 3-0 victory over FC Metz, and it offered an encouraging glimpse of his potential. Fernández was composed in possession, circulating the ball cleanly and showing the confidence to receive under pressure. He completed the vast majority of his passes, registered over 50 touches and even tested the opposition goalkeeper with a well-timed forward run into the box. The technical quality that made him one of Spain’s most highly rated young midfielders was evident throughout.

“Personally, I felt good, it’s progressing little by little,” Fernández said after the match to Ligue 1+. “I came to play, to get minutes and find rhythm. I’m very happy with the victory.” Then came the most striking admission.

“I expected a lower level, I’m very surprised by the league. In every match, the opponents are strong and physical. I have to keep working to succeed.”

At the same time, Ligue 1 delivered a reminder of its physical demands. In duels and when operating with his back to goal, Fernández found himself challenged by the athletic intensity of the French top flight. The experience was instructive rather than discouraging. At 18, adaptation is part of the process, and the early signs suggest he possesses both the intelligence and resilience to manage it.

A pathway at PSG?

The broader context at PSG also works in his favour. In recent years, the club’s environment was often perceived as difficult terrain for emerging players. Today, with a stronger collective identity under Luis Enrique, the pathway appears clearer. Fernández may not be an automatic starter, but he is visibly part of the project.

That project could hand him another significant moment on Saturday night when Le Havre AC travel to the Parc des Princes. With a busy schedule demanding careful squad management, the young Spaniard is reportedly in contention to start once again. Another opportunity would represent further confirmation of the trust placed in him since his arrival.
