Madhi Camara's form has come just at the right time for Rennes

Just months after a tense summer episode with Franck Haise, the 27-year-old midfielder delivered a commanding performance as the Stade Rennais FC cruised to a 3-0 victory over AJ Auxerre at the Stade de l’Abbé-Deschamps. For Haise, it marked a winning debut on the Rennes bench. For Camara, it felt like a defining statement.

Last summer, while managing OGC Nice, Haise believed he had secured Camara’s signature from Stade Brestois 29. An agreement was in place before Rennes intervened to complete an €8 million move. Haise publicly expressed disappointment at the time, questioning the late change of direction. Yet football moves quickly, and upon taking charge in Brittany, the coach sought to downplay the disagreement. Camara himself initiated a conversation before the trip to Burgundy, clearing the air and aligning ambitions. Their embrace late in the match spoke volumes.

A brilliant brace

On the pitch, Camara responded in the most decisive manner possible. Deployed as a high No.8 in a 4-3-3 system that accentuates his forward bursts and pressing intensity, he opened the scoring with an acrobatic finish in the 20th minute before curling home a precise strike just before half-time to make it 3-0. Beyond the goals, his influence shaped Rennes’ dominance. He drove transitions, attacked space between the lines and ensured tactical balance as Auxerre struggled to contain the visitors’ midfield energy.

The performance echoed the dynamic displays that defined his rise in Ligue 1. Now entering his prime years, Camara combines box-to-box endurance with improved end product, offering Haise a profile perfectly suited to a vertical, structured system. Rennes, revitalised following recent changes on the bench, have secured consecutive league victories and climbed into the European conversation, sitting within touching distance of the top four.

If Rennes are to sustain their push for continental qualification, Camara’s consistency could prove decisive. His blend of maturity, tactical intelligence and goal threat provides both stability and spark. What once appeared to be an awkward chapter between player and coach has evolved into a partnership built on clarity and shared ambition.

Les Rouge et Noir now currently sit only three points off Marseille in fourth, level with Lille in the European spots - Franck Haise's men face Toulouse next weekend.
