Lyon’s 13-game winning run is over. At a raucous Stade de la Meinau, RC Strasbourg Alsace delivered one of their most complete performances of the season to halt the in-form visitors and reignite their European push.
Paulo Fonseca’s side arrived in Alsace chasing a club-equalling 14th straight Ligue 1 victory. Instead, they were second best from the opening exchangese From kick-off, the hosts pressed aggressively and attacked with clarity. Julio Enciso and Valentín Barco found space between the lines, while Diego Moreira and Martial Godo stretched Lyon’s back line. The breakthrough arrived in the 37th minute. Moreira clipped a delicate ball over the top and Martial Godo finished with a composed outside-of-the-boot strike, capping a dominant first-half display.
Lyon struggled to match Strasbourg’s tempo and lost Pavel Šulc to injury before the interval, further disrupting their rhythm.
Strasbourg carried their momentum into the second half. Just after the restart, Diego Moreira doubled the lead, his powerful strike from distance taking a slight deflection and wrong-footing Dominik Greif.
Lyon responded through quality rather than control. On the hour mark, Corentin Tolisso produced a superb finish after Roman Yaremchuk’s delivery, briefly swinging momentum the visitors’ way. But Strasbourg remained composed. A VAR review awarded the hosts a late penalty following a foul by Clinton Mata, and Joaquín Panichelli converted calmly to seal a deserved victory.
Joaquín Panichelli has scored 13 goals in Ligue 1 2025-26, second only to Mason Greenwood (14), including five penalties, the highest tally for a Strasbourg player in a single Ligue 1 season since Frank Leboeuf in 1992-93 (6).
