Senegal lift the 2025 AFCON after a dramatic final full of Ligue 1 McDonald's talents in Rabat

Senegal are champions of Africa once more. After an utterly chaotic and unforgettable night in Rabat, the Lions of Teranga edged past hosts Morocco in extra time (1–0) to lift their second Africa Cup of Nations title, four years after their maiden triumph.

Decided by a moment of brilliance from Pape Gueye, the final will be remembered as much for its drama and controversy as for the football itself.

A tense final, Bono stands tall

Played in front of a partisan crowd at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium, the final quickly settled into a nervy, physical contest. Senegal controlled large spells of the first half and created the clearest chances, but repeatedly ran into an inspired Yassine Bounou, who denied Illiman Ndiaye and Pape Gueye with outstanding saves.

Morocco grew into the contest after the break, driven by the energy of their supporters and the influence of Achraf Hakimi down the right. Chances remained scarce, however, with both defences holding firm and Edouard Mendy alert when called upon.

Chaos before the breakthrough

The match exploded into controversy deep into stoppage time. After a lengthy VAR check, the referee awarded Morocco a penalty, triggering furious protests from the Senegal bench. In a remarkable scene, the Senegalese players briefly walked off the pitch before being called back by their captain Sadio Mané.

When play finally resumed, Brahim Díaz stepped up — and attempted a panenka. Mendy stood his ground and caught the ball comfortably, silencing the stadium and sending the final into extra time.

That missed penalty proved decisive. Four minutes into extra time, Pape Gueye surged forward, got goal-side of Hakimi and unleashed a ferocious strike into the top corner, leaving Bounou helpless. It was a stunning finish — and the defining moment of the final.

Morocco threw everything forward in response, even hitting the crossbar through Nayef Aguerd, but Senegal held firm to see out a famous victory.

Senegal confirm their dominance

Already crowned African champions in 2021, Senegal now add a second continental crown, cementing their status as the dominant force in African football. Mané, later named Player of the Tournament, lifted the trophy under torrential rain — a fitting image for a night of pure chaos.

For Morocco, the disappointment is immense. Hosts of the competition and seconds away from glory, they are left to rue a missed opportunity that will haunt them for years.
