Achraf Hakimi returns for Morocco qho qualify for the AFCON 2025 round of 16 with Mali and South Africa on Sunday evening.

Achraf Hakimi made his long-awaited return as Morocco secured qualification for the AFCON 2025 round of 16 with a convincing 3–0 win over Zambia in Rabat, while South Africa and Mali both experienced tense evenings as the group-stage picture continued to take shape.

Rested for the opening two group matches, the Paris Saint-Germain right-back was introduced just after the hour mark to a warm reception at the Prince Moulay Abdallah Stadium, providing a timely boost for Walid Regragui’s side ahead of the knockout stage. El Kaabi opened the scoring early with a close-range header (9’), before Brahim Díaz doubled the lead midway through the first half (27’). The Olympiacos striker then produced another spectacular acrobatic finish shortly after the restart (50’), putting the result beyond doubt. Yet minutes later it would finally be time for Paris Saint-Germain and Morocco's emblematic captain Achraf Hakimi entered the pitch for the first time this AFCON, after recovering from an ankle injury which saw him ruled out for several weeks out of Ligue 1 McDonald's action.

Morocco have now earned at least six points in their last five appearances in the group stage of the Africa Cup of Nations. They achieved this only three times in their previous 15 appearances at this stage.

Mali & South Africa qualify

Elsewhere, South Africa edged past Zimbabwe in a dramatic 3–2 victory to seal second place in Group B, joining Egypt in the last 16. Elsewhere, Mali secured their place in the AFCON 2025 round of 16 despite being held to a goalless draw by Comoros on Monday evening, benefiting from Morocco’s victory over Zambia to finish second in Group A. Stade Brestois striker Kamory Doumbia featured along with Auxerre's Lassine Sinayoko and Lens attacker Mamadou Sangaré
