Marseille dominate Nice to provisionally go top of Ligue 1 McDonald's in Friday evening's action

Olympique de Marseille cruised to a 5-1 win over Mediterranean rivals OGC Nice to provisionally go top of the league on Friday as Ligue 1 McDonald's got back to action following the international break. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang opened the scoring, before a brace from Mason Greenwood, and efforts from Igor Paixao and Timothy Weah saw Les Phocéens run riot at the Allianz Riviera on Friday evening.

A chilly Côte d'Azur would await both sides on Friday evening, as it was a mediterranean derby under the chill of almost sub-zero temperatures at the Allianz Arena. Roberto De Zerbi rang the changes for Marseille as second goalkeeper Jeffrey De Lange was called upon to replace Geronimo Rulli, whilst Geoffrey returned to action in Ligue 1 McDonald's for the first time several months. Meanwhile for the hosts, Terem Moffi led the line, and Melvin Bard was handed the captain's armband.

But OM were quick to start the game as Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang was released down the right side, his cross turned away for a corner in the opening seconds. Whilst Nice defended well in the opening periods it was the away side that were looking to go into the ascendancy by the ten minute mark, as some fine, quick play down the left side saw Paixao released into the box - Greenwood would finish into the back on the net. A corner would be given, and Benjamin Pavard's header had to be tipped over the bar from Diouf. Nice didn't pick up their man for a second corner in a row, and the Frenchman simply flicked on for Aubameyang to finish from close range with one touch. Nice were looking to get back into the game quickly, and Melvin Bard saw an opportunity blocked from close range by a combination of Weah and Pavard.

Mason Greenwood decisive

Greenwood then drove into space and closed in on the box, but his strike was saved well by Diouf. But then on the counter only minutes later, the Englishman managed to close the angle on the edge of the box and his strike was deflected by Vanhoutte past Diouf to double Marseille's lead. Despite some chances from the hosts, Marseille had a golden opportunity to get a third just before the half-time whistle, fluffing his shot from a two-on-one situation from the goalkeeper. Nice came out for the second period with more attacking intent, but it was Les Olympiens who would provide two quickfire strikes to further their lead. Mason Greenwood would strike low inside the box from a tight angle to score his second of the game (52'), before Timothy Weah squeezed in a sumptuously struck half volley at the near post (57').
