Even after a heartbreaking last-minute loss to PSG (2–3), Afonso Moreira somehow found the energy to walk toward the virages and salute the supporters. Head down, fringe across his forehead, arms raised—he received a warm ovation, a deserved reward after another outstanding performance.

Four minutes after Warren Zaïre-Emery opened the scoring, Moreira made the perfect run in behind the midfielder and finished calmly past Lucas Chevalier to level the match (1–1, 30'). His movement, timing and composure once again lifted the Groupama Stadium.

big game player

It's becoming a bit of a habit. Moreira has already scored in several major fixtures: a decisive strike against Basel in the Europa League, a spectacular stoppage-time winner versus Strasbourg three days later, and now another key contribution against PSG. His two assists at Paris FC further strengthened the impression that Lyon may have unearthed a genuine bargain.

Fofana’s injury had initially felt catastrophic for OL’s fragile attacking structure, but Moreira’s enthusiasm, depth-running and ability to repeat high-intensity efforts have eased that sense of crisis. On Sunday, both Zaïre-Emery and Illia Zabarnyi struggled to contain him, overwhelmed by his pressing, courage and sharp changes of rhythm.

Inside the dressing room, his rise has earned immediate respect. “Afonso is a very good player who works hard every day. Since Malick got injured, he’s had game time, he has the coach’s trust and ours too. He must keep going—it’s very positive," said OL captain Corentin Tolisso following the PSG game.

Moreira has refined his game significantly since the start of the season. Against PSG, he did not misplace a single pass, losing the ball only when attempting to push play forward. This efficiency is matched with a strong defensive contribution, making him an increasingly complete option for the coaching staff. Assistant coach Jorge Maciel underlined the importance of his natural strengths, declaring that “He must keep his generosity and his verticality - those are his points of strength. He’s showing that he can bring us depth and make good decisions in dangerous areas.”
