Both goalkeepers have split the duties between the pipes as Majecki has featured in 23 fixtures while Köhn has played in 18 games. While it’s not the norm to handle a goalkeeper situation this way, it’s been a unique season for Monaco in goal.
The Polish standout has recorded five clean sheets, while Köhn has registered six clean sheets. Both players have made the most of their opportunities when out on the pitch, but neither has been able to grab the starting job and run away with it.
Injuries have also played a role in the back-and-forth between the two shot-stoppers. Majecki has suffered an ankle and muscle injury during this season, allowing Köhn to fill in, but the main reason Hütter has gone back and forth is performance.
With Monaco in a tightly contested race for the UEFA Champions League spots for next season, the slightest misstep in a player’s performance will be crucial for the manager to evaluate whether he needs to choose another option.
Last month, Hütter talked about regularly using two goalkeepers, emphasizing that it’s a team effort and every player has a part to play in reaching their goals.
“It’s unique as a coach to have to make this decision, even though you never know what can happen during a season. We believe in all our players, and it’s important to remember that we win and lose together. No one is solely responsible for the results! We are obviously at a pivotal moment in the season, at the start of the final sprint, and we are fully focused on our objectives.”
Monaco are in second place in the Ligue 1 McDonald’s table with 53 points, but the race is tight—just five points separate them from seventh-place OGC Nice, who sit on 48. If any player hits a rough patch, it could seriously hurt Monaco—not just missing out on the Champions League, but potentially falling out of European competition altogether.
Les Rouge et Blanc have five games left this season, and it’ll be interesting to see whether Majecki or Köhn steps up down the stretch to help the team secure a Champions League spot for next season.
