Recap: Malick Fofana the hero for OL in win vs. Toulouse

After a two-match winless streak, Olympique Lyonnais turned their fortunes around with a 2-1 win over Toulouse on Sunday at Stadium de Toulouse, winning their second straight match in all competitions.

While Lyon secured the three points, Pierre Sage and his team had to come from behind after the home side scored the opening goal thanks to a goal from Yann Gboho in the 14th minute.

It didn't take long for the visitors to find the scoresheet, but they needed luck on their side as OL's first goal game was via an own goal from Rasmus Nicolaisen in the 28th minute.

The contest went into halftime 1-1 and stayed that way for nearly the entire second half. Lyon and Toulouse were heading toward a draw, but Malick Fofana scored in the second half's stoppage time to give Les Gones the away win.

After the match, Sage spoke at his press conference and gave glowing praise to the 19-year-old for stepping up in a significant way.

"I see him as a player with a very high level of skill, and he’s currently getting ready to reach that. I really think the next step for him is to start matches and keep up his performance. Once he’s played a few good games and we see the same level of impact as when he comes off the bench, we can confidently say he’s got that down. From there, he can keep building on that momentum. I truly believe he has a bright future ahead."

While it was a joyful result for OL, there was frustration for Toulouse as the squad understood that they let points slip away after having a 1-0 advantage at home. Midfielder Vincent Sierro spoke to DAZN and noted that the team is disappointed with how the match played out.

"It’s really frustrating. We put in a lot of effort throughout the match, and to give up that goal at the end is just disappointing. We had what it took to win. We created chances, had opportunities, and were even leading... In the end, not coming away with at least a point feels like a real letdown."

Lyon will look to extend their winning streak to three matches after wins over Olympiacos and Toulouse this week. OL will travel to Scotland to face Rangers FC on Thursday night with both teams coming off Matchday 1 victories in the UEFA Europa League.

Toulouse are in 15th place and outside the relegation zone and will need to get back on the winning side when they face LOSC Lille next Saturday at Stade Pierre-Mauroy.
