Late on Monday evening, Olympique de Marseille announced the signing of Danish international midfielder Pierre-Emile Højbjerg. The defensive midfielder, who has appeared more than 80 times for his country since making his senior debut in 2014, arrives on a one-year loan deal from Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur. Having appeared almost 200 times for the North London side following his arrival from Southampton, he joins Les Phocéens with a purchase option available to be exercised at the end of the season.

Born in Denmark's capital, Copenhagen, he rose through the academies of local clubs Skold and KB before joining Brøndby in 2009. His strong play there, and with various Danish international youth teams saw him catch the eye of Bayern Munich, where he spent parts of four seasons with the first team, splitting time with the reserves and also spending time on loan with Augsburg and Schalke 04. A two-time Bundesliga winner, he also became a regular for his country, but following a strong season in Gelsenkirchen he was on the move again.
Joining Southampton in the summer of 2016, Højberg became a first-team regular, keeping his place as he helped the Saints avoid relegation and reach the 2017 League Cup Final despite a churn of changes in the technical area. Four years into his tenure on the south coast, he made the move north to London, where he joined Jose Mourinho's Tottenham. He was at once a regular for the Portuguese, and even won the Premier League's Player of the Month Award in November, regularly helping the team finish in the European places, including the 2022/23 season where he scored a gutting late winner against his new club in the Champions League Group Stage.
