Only days after officially announcing the anticipated return of Paul Pogba to French football, AS Monaco confirm the arrival of Ansu Fati on a loan deal as the Ligue 1 McDonald’s club looks to become the place where the 22-year-old can let his talent flourish over the next season.
It was a challenging 2024-25 season for Fati, making just 11 appearances and dealing with several injuries that limited his availability. During the campaign, he suffered a foot and muscle injury, which became a major setback to his campaign.
Fati burst onto the scene during the 2019-20 season, making his first-team and La Liga debut for Barcelona without even playing a match for the reserves.
He came off the bench in a win over Real Betis and at 16 years and 298 days old, the then-teenager became the second-youngest player ever to appear for the club, only 18 days older than Vicenç Martínez, who debuted in 1941.
That same season, he scored his first professional goal in a 2–2 draw against Osasuna, becoming the youngest goalscorer in Barcelona’s history at 16 years and 304 days. He was also the third-youngest player to score in La Liga.
In September 2019, during his first career start, he became the youngest player in La Liga history to score and assist in the same match, doing so at 16 years and 318 days.
Despite the promising start to his career, it’s been a rollercoaster ride for Fati, who has made 123 total appearances for Barcelona, scoring 29 goals and eight assists.
The attacker also went on loan to Brighton & Hove Albion during the 2023-24 season where he played under current Marseille boss Roberto De Zerbi and in European competition. Fati made 27 total appearances while scoring four goals and recording one assist for the Seagulls.
"AS Monaco are delighted to announce the arrival of Ansu Fati. The 22-year-old Spanish international striker is on loan from FC Barcelona for the 2025/2026 season, with an option to buy," said the Principlaity club in a club statement on Tuesday afternoon. "This season, Ansu Fati will discover Ligue 1 McDonald's with AS Monaco, strengthening
monegasque attacking options."
